Abstract

An electrophysiology catheter and method of use for mapping and ablation procedures. The catheter includes a braided conductive member at its distal end that can be radially expanded. The catheter can be used in endocardial and epicardial mapping and ablation procedures.

Claims

1. A medical device for electrophysiology procedures, comprising:

a catheter having a braided conductive member at a distal end thereof;

a mechanism that expands the braided conductive member from an undeployed to a deployed position, wherein the braided conductive member forms a disk in the deployed position; and

a temperature sensing device attached to the braided conductive member, wherein the temperature sensing device is bonded in a parallel manner with a filament of the braided conductive member.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the temperature sensing device comprises a thermocouple.

3. The medical device of claim 2, wherein the thermocouple is electrically insulated from the braided conductive member.

4. The medical device of claim 1, further comprising a hollow tubular lumen within the catheter.

The medical device of claim 1, wherein filaments of the braided conductive member comprise an insulative coating, wherein the insulative coating is at least partially removed in a region to form a distally facing ablative ring, and wherein the temperature sensing device is coupled to the braided conductive member within the ablative ring.

6. The medical device of claim 1, further comprising at least one additional temperature sensing device attached to the braided conductive member.

7. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the temperature sensing device is woven into the braided conductive member.

8. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the braided conductive member is adapted to be positioned within a heart vessel when the braided conductive member is in a deployed position.

9. A medical device for electrophysiology procedures, comprising:

a catheter having a braided conductive member at a distal end thereof;

a mechanism that expands the braided conductive member from an undeployed to a deployed position, wherein the braided conductive member forms a disk in the deployed position; and

first, second, third and fourth temperature sensing devices attached to the braided conductive member, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth temperature sensing devices are respectively attached to first, second, third, and fourth quadrants of the braided conductive member.

10. A medical device for electrophysiology procedures, comprising:

a catheter having a braided conductive member at a distal end thereof;

a mechanism that expands the braided conductive member from an undeployed to a deployed position, wherein the braided conductive member forms a disk in the deployed position; and

wherein the braided conductive member comprises a plurality of filaments, and wherein a temperature sensing device is attached to each filament of the plurality of filaments.

11. A medical device for electrophysiology procedures, comprising:

a catheter having a braided conductive member at a distal end thereof, the braided conductive member comprising a proximal end and a distal end;

a mechanism that expands the braided conductive member from an undeployed to a deployed position;

wherein the braided conductive member comprises a distally facing ablative ring located distal to the proximal end of the braided conductive member and proximal to the distal end of the braided conductive member when the braided conductive member is in the deployed position; and

wherein the braided conductive member comprises at least one temperature sensor.

12. The medical device of claim 11, wherein the braided conductive member is adapted to be positioned within a heart vessel when the braided conductive member is in a deployed position.

13. The medical device of claim 11, wherein the at least one temperature sensor is located on the distally facing ablative ring.

14. A method of using a catheter having a braided conductive member with a plurality of electrically independent sectors, the method comprising:

sensing the temperature of tissue adjacent one of the electrically independent sectors; and

independently controlling the power delivered to the filaments of the sector in response to the sensed temperature.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein independently controlling the power delivered to the filaments comprises controlling the power using a feedback algorithm.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein independently controlling the power delivered to the filaments comprises providing power to at least one of the electrically independent sectors and not providing power to at least another one of the electrically independent sectors.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein independently controlling the power delivered to the filaments comprises modulating the voltage supplied to at least one of the electrically independent sectors.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein independently controlling the power delivered to the filaments comprises modulating the current supplied to at least one of the electrically independent sectors.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein sensing the temperature of tissue adjacent one of the electrically independent sectors comprises sensing the temperature of tissue inside a blood vessel.
