Abstract

The present invention is a technique of, and system for, imaging vascular anatomy over distance considerably greater than the maximum practical field of view of a magnetic resonance imaging system while using substantially one contrast agent injection. The technique and system of the present invention acquires image data of a plurality of image volumes which are representative of different portions of the patient'"'"'s body. The image data of each image volume includes image data which is representative of the center of k-space. The acquisition of image data which is representative of the center of k-space is correlated with a concentration of contrast agent in the artery(ies) residing in the image volume being substantially greater than the concentration of contrast agent in veins and background tissue adjacent to the artery(ies). This provides preferential enhancement of arteries relative to adjacent veins and background tissue for each acquisition, wherein each acquisition is representative of a different portion of the arterial system (e.g., abdominal aorta, femoral, popliteal, and tibial arteries).

Claims

1. A method of imaging arteries in a human patient using a magnetic resonance imaging system and a magnetic resonance contrast agent, wherein the arteries include a first artery which is located in a first image volume, a second artery which is located in a second image volume and a third artery which is located in a third image volume, the method comprising:

injecting the human patient with the magnetic resonance contrast agent via one injection;

collecting magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume, wherein at least a substantial portion of the image data of the first image volume is collected during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the first artery;

collecting magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume, wherein at least a substantial portion of the image data of the second image volume is collected during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the second artery;

collecting magnetic resonance image data of the third image volume, wherein at least a substantial portion of the image data of the third image volume is collected during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the third artery; and

constructing an image of;

the first artery using the image data of the first image volume, wherein the first artery is in the abdomen or the pelvis of the human patient;

the second artery using the image data of the second image volume, wherein the second artery is in a leg of the human patient, and

the third artery using the image data of the third image volume, wherein third artery is in a calf of the human patient.

2. The method of claim 1 further including combining the images of the first, second and third arteries in a mosaic manner.

3. The method of claim 1 further including monitoring a region of interest to detect the arrival of the injected contrast agent in the region of interest, wherein the region of interest includes at least a portion of the artery.

4. The method of claim 3 further including applying a tourniquet to the human patient to reduce blood flow in the third artery of the human patient.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the middle of an imaging sequence.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the third image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein:

collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence; and

collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the third image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein injecting the human patient with the magnetic resonance contrast agent includes injecting the magnetic resonance contrast agent into the human patient over a substantial portion of the period of collection of the image data of the first image volume.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein injecting the human patient with the magnetic resonance contrast agent includes injecting the magnetic resonance contrast agent to the human patient in a bolus manner.

11. A magnetic resonance imaging system for imaging arteries in a human patient using an injected contrast agent of one injection, wherein the arteries include a first artery which is located in a first image volume wherein the first artery is in the abdomen of the human patient, a second artery which is located in a second image volume wherein the second artery is in the pelvis or leg of the human patient, and a third artery which is located in a third image volume wherein the third artery is in the calf of the human patient, the system comprises:

a platform to support the human patient, the platform being moveable between a plurality of discrete locations including a first location which defines a first field of view encompassing the first artery and a second location which defines a second field of view encompassing the second artery;

a platform controller, coupled to the platform, to move the platform from the first location to the second location; and

magnetic resonance imaging unit, coupled to the platform controller, to collect;

magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the first artery and while the platform is positioned at the first location,

magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the second artery and while the platform is positioned at the second location, and

magnetic resonance image data of the third image volume during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the third artery and while the platform is positioned at the third location; and

wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit constructs an image of the first artery using the magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume, an image of the second artery using the magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume, and an image of the third artery using the magnetic resonance image data of the third image volume.

The system of claim 11 wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit instructs the platform controller to (i) move the platform from the first location to the second location after collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume and (ii) move the platform from the second location to the third location after collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit collects magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the middle of an imaging sequence.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit collects magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit collects:

magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence; and

magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

16. The system of claim 12 wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit collects:

magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume which is representative of the center of k-space after the middle of an imaging sequence; and

magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

17. The system of claim 11 wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit collects:

magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the middle of an imaging sequence; and

magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

18. The system of claim 11 wherein the magnetic resonance imaging unit automatically collects the image data of the second image volume in response to receiving information that the platform arrived at the second location.

19. A method of imaging arteries in a human patient using a magnetic resonance imaging system and a magnetic resonance contrast agent, wherein the arteries include a first artery, which is located in a first image volume, and a second artery, which is located in a second image volume, the method comprising:

injecting the human patient with the magnetic resonance contrast agent via one injection;

monitoring a region of interest to detect the arrival of the injected contrast agent in the region of interest, wherein the region of interest includes at least a portion of the first artery;

collecting magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume after detecting the arrival of the injected contrast agent in the region of interest, wherein at least a portion of the image data of the first image volume is collected during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the first artery;

collecting magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume, wherein at least a portion of the image data of the second image volume is collected during an arterial phase of contrast enhancement of the second artery; and

constructing an image of (i) the first artery using the image data of the first image volume and (ii) the second artery using the image data of the second image volume.

20. The method of claim 19 further including combining the images of the first and second arteries in a mosaic manner.

21. The method of claim 19 wherein collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the middle of an imaging sequence.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

23. The method of claim 19 wherein:

collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence; and

collecting the magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space substantially in the beginning of an imaging sequence.

24. The method of claim 19 further including automatically moving the human patient from a first location, which defines a first field of view encompassing the first artery, to a second location, which defines a second field of view encompassing the second artery, immediately after collecting magnetic resonance image data of the first image volume.

25. The method of claim 24 further including automatically collecting magnetic resonance image data of the second image volume immediately after the human patient is moved to the second location.
