1. A system for routing information through a network of switches, comprising:

  • a first network element configured for communication in accordance with layer one switching whereby timing information is used for routing said information through said first network element in accordance with a first reservation schedule;

    a second network element configured for communication in accordance with layer one switching whereby timing information is used for routing said information through said second network element in accordance with a second reservation schedule, wherein said second reservation schedule is synchronized with said first reservation schedule;

    a data source, said data source configured for communication with said first network element;

    a data receiver, said data receiver configured for communication with said second network element; and

    a transmission path between said data source and said data receiver, said transmission path configured for transmission of said information from said data source to said data receiver.
