1. A system for routing information through a network of switches, comprising:
- a first network element configured for communication in accordance with layer one switching whereby timing information is used for routing said information through said first network element in accordance with a first reservation schedule;
a second network element configured for communication in accordance with layer one switching whereby timing information is used for routing said information through said second network element in accordance with a second reservation schedule, wherein said second reservation schedule is synchronized with said first reservation schedule;
a data source, said data source configured for communication with said first network element;
a data receiver, said data receiver configured for communication with said second network element; and
a transmission path between said data source and said data receiver, said transmission path configured for transmission of said information from said data source to said data receiver.

Abstract
A system and method are described for synchronizing store-and-forward networks and for scheduling and transmitting continuous, periodic, predictable, time-sensitive, or urgent information such as real-time and high-priority messages over those networks. This enables packet-, cell-, and/or frame-based networks to thereby efficiently switch voice, video, streaming, and other real-time or high-priority data at the layer one or physical level, thus ensuring that the delivery of selected information can be made fast, on-time, immediate, non-blocked, non-congested, loss-less, jitter-free, and have guaranteed delivery, and guaranteed quality of service.
