Method and system for establishing a multimedia connection by negotiating capability in an outband control channel
First Claim
1. A method:
- indicating in at least one capability information element within an outband signaling message the supported at least one type of information stream;
adapting message flows of packet switched network signalling elements and circuit switched network signalling elements to enable an end-to-end multimedia capability negotiation;
adapting the capability information between said packet switched network signalling elements and said circuit switched network signalling elements to enable an end-to-end multimedia capability negotiation;
performing a capability negotiation by transmitting said capability information between a packet switched terminal and a circuit switched terminal or between said packet switched terminal and a multimedia control function, said circuit switched terminal device comprising at least one information processor, each information processor supporting at least one type of information stream;
selecting at least one of said information processors based on the result of said capability negotiation; and
establishing a multimedia connection using said selected at least one information processor between said packet switched terminal and said circuit switched terminal based on said selected type of information stream.

Abstract
The present invention relates to a method and system for establishing a connection to a terminal device, wherein a user capability information defining supported types of information streams is set in a compatibility information element within an outband signaling message, and a capability negotiation is performed by transmitting said outband signaling message via an outband control channel. The code or user capability information may be set at the terminal device or at an intermediate network element based on a subscriber profile information obtained from a subscriber database. Thereby, the user capability, such as a multimedia session composition, can be already negotiated or handled during the outband call setup phase, and a corresponding inband negotiation can be avoided.
