Abstract

A wireless broadband communications system that increases data throughput and link availability through more efficient use of the electromagnetic spectrum allocated to the system. In one mode of operation, the system periodically measures a noise or interference level associated with each one of a plurality of communications channels, and generates a histogram of the measurements associated with each channel. Next, the system determines a noise/interference level estimate for each channel as a predetermined percentile of the histogram associated with the respective channel. The system then selects a respective one of the channels having the lowest noise/interference level estimate for subsequent signal transmission.

Claims

1. A method of spectrum management in a wireless communications system, the wireless communications system being operable to transmit and receive signals over a plurality of communications channels between respective ends of a communications link, comprising the steps of:

periodically measuring at least one of a noise level and an interference level associated with each one of the plurality of channels;

generating a histogram of the noise and interference level measurements associated with each channel, each histogram comprising a plurality of bins, each bin corresponding to a predetermined range of noise and interference levels associated with the respective channel;

determining a noise and interference level estimate for each channel as a predetermined percentile of the histogram of measured noise and interference levels associated with the respective channel; and

selecting a respective one of the plurality of channels having the lowest noise and interference level estimate for use in subsequent signal transmission.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the measuring step includes periodically measuring at least one of a noise level and an interference level associated with each one of the plurality of channels at times between signal transmission and signal reception.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the predetermined range of noise and interference levels corresponding to each bin is approximately equal to 1 dB.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the predetermined percentile of the histogram of measured noise and interference levels associated with the respective channels is the 99.9 percentile.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the selecting step is controlled by at least one of an averaging time and a hysteresis.

6. A method of spectrum management in a wireless communications system, the wireless communications system being operable to transmit and receive signals over a plurality of communications channels between respective ends of a communications link, comprising the steps of:

periodically measuring at least one of a noise level and an interference level associated with each one of the plurality of channels at a first end of the link, thereby generating a first set of measurements corresponding to the first end of the link for each channel;

determining a first noise and interference level estimate corresponding to the first end of the link for each channel based on the first set of measurements for the respective channel;

periodically measuring at least one of a noise level and an interference level associated with each one of the plurality of channels at a second end of the link, thereby generating a second set of measurements corresponding to the second end of the link for each channel;

determining a second noise and interference level estimate corresponding to the second end of the link for each channel based on the second set of measurements for the respective channel;

determining a greater one of the first and second noise and interference level estimates for each channel, thereby generating a plurality of greater noise and interference level estimates corresponding to the respective channels;

determining a smallest one of the plurality of greater noise and interference level estimates; and

selecting the channel corresponding to the smallest one of the plurality of greater noise and interference level estimates for use in subsequent signal transmission.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein each of the first and second measuring steps includes periodically measuring at least one of a noise level and an interference level associated with each one of the plurality of channels at times between signal transmission and signal reception.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the selecting step is controlled by at least one of an averaging time and a hysteresis.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein each of the first and second determining steps includes:

generating a histogram of the set of measurements associated with each channel, each histogram comprising a plurality of bins, each bin corresponding to a predetermined range of noise and interference levels associated with the respective channel; and

determining the noise and interference level estimate for each channel as a predetermined percentile of the histogram of the set of measurements associated with the respective channel.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the predetermined range of noise and interference levels corresponding to each bin is approximately equal to 1 dB.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the predetermined percentile of the histogram of measured noise and interference levels associated with the respective channels is the 99.9 percentile.
