Wireless communication network including directional and omni-directional communication links and related methods
First Claim
1. A wireless communication network comprising:
- a plurality of mobile nodes each comprising at least one wireless transceiver, a directional antenna and an omni-directional antenna connected to said at least one wireless transceiver, and a controller for controlling said at least one wireless transceiver;
said controller comprisinga time slot scheduling unit to schedule time slots to establish communication links with neighboring mobile nodes, anda traffic coordination unit for requesting additional time slots from, and allocating additional time slots to, other mobile nodes based upon link communications demand;
said controller also forestablishing an omni-directional communication link with another mobile node,determining a link quality value for the omni-directional communication link, andestablishing a directional communication link with said other mobile node if the link quality value for the omni-directional communication link is greater than a quality threshold.

Abstract
A wireless communication network may include a plurality of mobile nodes each including at least one wireless transceiver, a directional antenna and an omni-directional antenna connected to the at least one wireless transceiver, and a controller for controlling the at least one wireless transceiver. The controller may also be for controlling the at least one wireless transceiver, establishing an omni-directional communication link with another mobile node, and determining a link quality value for the omni-directional communication link. The controller may also establish a directional communication link with the other mobile node if the link quality value for the omni-directional communication link is greater than a quality threshold.
