Abstract

A quality of service (QoS) aware, wireless point to multi-point telecommunications system includes: a wireless base station coupled to a first data network; one or more host workstations coupled to the first data network; one or more subscriber customer premise equipment (CPE) stations in wireless communications with the wireless base station over a shared bandwidth wireless medium using a packet-centric protocol; one or more subscriber workstations coupled to each of the subscriber CPE stations over a second network; and a resource allocation device that allocates shared bandwidth among the subscriber CPE stations to optimize end-user quality of service (QoS) for an IP flow.

Claims

1. A quality of service (QoS) aware, wireless point to multipoint telecommunications system comprising:

a wireless base station coupled to a first data network;

one or more host workstations coupled to said first data network;

one or more subscriber customer premise equipment (CPE) stations in wireless communication with said wireless base station over a shared bandwidth wireless medium using a packet-centric protocol;

one or more subscriber workstations coupled to each of said subscriber CPE stations over a second network; and

resource allocation device that allocates said shared bandwidth wireless medium among said subscriber CPE station to optimize end user quality of service (QoS) for an IP flow,

wherein said resource allocation device comprises means for assigning future slots of a transmission frame to a data packet in the transmission frame for transmission over said shared bandwidth wireless medium, and

wherein said assigning means comprises;

means for applying an advanced reservation algorithm;

means for reserving a first slot for a first data packet of an Internet Protocol (IP) flow in a future transmission frame based on said algorithm;

means for reserving a second slot for a second data packet of said IP flow in a transmission frame subsequent in time to said future transmission frame based on said algorithm,

wherein said second data packet is placed in said second slot in an isochronous manner to the placing of said first data packet in said first slot.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein there is a periodic variation between the placing of said first data packet in said first slot and the placing of said second data packet in said second slot.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein there is no periodic variation between the placing of said first data packet in said first slot and the placing of said second data packet in said second slot.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein said algorithm determines whether said IP flow is jitter-sensitive.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein said resource allocation device comprises:

means for taking into account hierarchical class based priorities (HCBPs) for said IP flow.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein said resource allocation device comprises:

means for taking into account virtual private network (VPN) priorities for said IP flow.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein said resource allocation device comprises:

means for taking into account service level agreement (SLA) based priorities for said IP flow.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein said resource allocation device comprises:

means for taking into account any type of service (TOS) priorities for said IP flow.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein said resource allocation device comprises:

means for taking into account any differentiated services (Diffserv) priorities for said IP flow.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein said wireless base station comprises a wireless access point (AP).

11. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of said subscriber CPE stations is at least one of a wireless local area network (LAN) station (STA) and a wireless wide area network (WAN) station.

12. A quality of service (QoS) aware, wireless communications system comprising:

a wireless access point base station coupled to a first data network;

one or more host workstations coupled to said first data network;

one or more wireless network stations in wireless communication with said wireless access point base station over a shared wireless network using a packet-centric protocol; and

a scheduler that allocates resources of said shared wireless network among said wireless network stations to optimize end-user quality of service (QoS) for an Internet Protocol (IP) flow, wherein said IP flow is associated with at least one of a latency-sensitive and a jitter-sensitive application;

wherein said scheduler comprises assigning means for assigning future slots of a transmission frame to a portion of said IP flow in said transmission frame for transmission over said shared wireless network,

wherein said assigning means comprises;

means for applying an advanced reservation algorithm;

means for reserving a first slot for a first data packet of an Internet Protocol (IP) flow in a future transmission frame based on said algorithm;

means for reserving a second slot for a second data packet of said IP flow in a transmission frame subsequent in time to said future transmission frame based on said algorithm,

wherein said second data packet is placed in said second slot in an isochronous manner to the placing of said first data packet in said first slot.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein there is a periodic variation between the placing of said first portion in said first slot and the placing of said second portion in said second slot.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein there is no periodic variation between the placing of said first portion in said first slot and the placing of said second portion in said second slot.

15. The system of claim 12, wherein said algorithm determines whether said IP flow is jitter-sensitive.

16. The system of claim 12, wherein said scheduler comprises:

means for taking into account hierarchical class based priorities (HCBPs) for said IP flow.

17. The system of claim 12, wherein said scheduler comprises:

means for taking into account virtual private network (VPN) priorities for said IP flow.

18. The system of claim 12, wherein said scheduler comprises:

means for taking into account service level agreement (SLA) based priorities for said IP flow.

19. The system of claim 12, wherein said scheduler comprises:

means for taking into account any type of service (TOS) priorities for said IP flow.

20. The system of claim 12, wherein said scheduler comprises:

means for taking into account any differentiated services (DiffServ) priorities for said IP flow.

21. The system of claim 12, wherein said portion comprises a packet.

22. The system of claim 12, wherein said IP flow is associated with at least one of a voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) data and a video data application.

23. The system of claim 12, wherein said shared wireless network is at least one of a local area network (LAN) and a wide area network (WAN).

24. The system of claim 12, wherein said wireless network stations are at least one of a local area network (LAN) wireless network station and a wide area network (WAN) wireless network station.

25. The system of claim 12, wherein said scheduler classifies a plurality of packets according to end-user quality of service (QoS) requirements of said plurality of packets.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein packet scheduler behavior is controlled according to said end-user requirements as managed by a management system.

27. The system of claim 25, wherein said scheduler allocates said resources of said shared wireless network for transmission of said plurality of packets in at least one of an upstream and a downstream direction according to a scheduling algorithm.

28. The system of claim 25, wherein said scheduler constructs a wireless transmission frame from said plurality of packets taking into account said end-user QoS requirements so as to maximize wireless bandwidth utilization.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein said scheduler places at least one of a complete and a partial packet into said wireless transmission frame.

30. The system of claim 25, wherein said scheduler controls a local area network media access control layer (MAC) layer taking into account said end-user QoS requirements.

31. The system of claim 25, wherein said scheduler comprises an off-the-shelf MAC/PHY network interface card (NIC) adapter including at least one of a PCI form factor, a PCMCIA form factor, a PC Card form factor, a PCI bus, a PCMCIA bus, and a PC Card bus.

32. The system of claim 25, wherein a first scheduler portion of said scheduler executes on said wireless access point base station, and a second scheduler portion of said scheduler executes on said one or more wireless network stations;

and

wherein said first scheduler portion and said second scheduler portion communicate so as to allow said first scheduler portion to control allocation of said resources for upstream communications.

33. The system of claim 25, wherein said scheduler coordinates access to RF wireless resource by said one or more wireless network stations, by controlling access to said RF wireless resource via receiving reservation requests and sending grants.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein said scheduler periodically polls said one or more wireless network stations for reservation requests so as to minimize latency for new IP flows.

35. The system of claim 33, wherein said coordinated access obviates performance degradation caused by contention-based media access methods.

36. The system of claim 33, wherein said coordinated access ensures said one or more wireless network stations receive an allocation of at least a minimum latency for new IP flows.

37. The system of claim 33, wherein said coordinated access ensures high priority packets are provided appropriate bandwidth needed by said high priority packets.

38. The system of claim 25, wherein said scheduler efficiently allocates wireless bandwidth for IP flows requiring special QoS treatment and provides application-aware packet discards, while avoiding uncontrolled packet discards and media access contention resolution.

39. The system of claim 25, wherein said scheduler efficiently allocates wireless bandwidth in oversubscribed environments without consequent degradation of high priority Voice over IP (VoIP) and video applications.
