1. A method of identifying a peptide that binds to a metal nanoparticle comprising:
- a. preparing a peptide library of 7-12 residues in length expressed or displayed on the surface of phage;
b. contacting said peptide library with a metal nanoparticle selected from at least one of Co, CoPt, SmCo5 or FePt;
c. eluting the peptide that specifically binds to the metal nanoparticle and wherein the peptide nucleates the nanoparticle;
d. repeating steps b and c at least once; and
e. isolating the peptide.
