Abstract

The present invention includes methods for producing magnetic nanocrystals by using a biological molecule that has been modified to possess an amino acid oligomer that is capable of specific binding to a magnetic material.

Claims

1. A method of identifying a peptide that binds to a metal nanoparticle comprising:

a. preparing a peptide library of 7-12 residues in length expressed or displayed on the surface of phage;

b. contacting said peptide library with a metal nanoparticle selected from at least one of Co, CoPt, SmCo₅ or FePt;

c. eluting the peptide that specifically binds to the metal nanoparticle and wherein the peptide nucleates the nanoparticle;

d. repeating steps b and c at least once; and

e. isolating the peptide.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the metal nanoparticle comprises Co.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the metal nanoparticle comprises CoPt.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the metal nanoparticle comprise SmCo₅.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the metal nanoparticle comprises FePt.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the phage is M13 bacteriophage.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the contacting occurs at room temperature.
