1. A method for providing location data for a portable device within an environment to a controlling device used to command operations of a one or more home appliances, the method comprising:

  • providing a database accessible to the controlling device, the database containing a plurality of location data each associated with at least one of a plurality of location signal receiving devices within the environment;

    receiving a location signal from a location signal generating device associated with the portable device by a one or more of the plurality of location signal receiving devices within the environment;

    using an identity of the one or more location signal receiving devices within the environment that received the location signal to select an associated one of the plurality of location data within the database;

    providing the selected location data to the controlling device; and

    causing the controlling device to use the selected location data to place the controlling device into a state for commanding operations of the one or more home appliances.
