Abstract

A system and method of pushing user-selected data items from a host system to a user'"'"'s mobile data communication device upon detecting the occurrence of one or more user-defined event triggers is provided. The user may then move (or file) the data items to a particular folder within a folder hierarchy stored in the mobile data communication device, or may execute some other system operation on the data item. Software operating at the mobile device and the host system then synchronizes the folder hierarchy of the mobile device with a folder hierarchy of the host system, and any actions executed on the data items at the mobile device are then automatically replicated on the same data items stored at the host system, thus eliminating the need for the user to manually replicate actions at the host system that have been executed at the mobile data communication device.

Claims

1. A method of redirecting information between a messaging host system and a wireless mobile data device that is associated with a computer conhected over a network to the messaging host system, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving an automatically generated notification at a redirector component associated with the messaging host system indicating receipt of a mail item by the messaging host system, wherein the mail item is addressed to a data store associated with the messaging host system that is viewable via the computer;

processing the mail item at the redirector component to add identification information associated with the wireless mobile data device;

sending the mail item from the redirector component to the wireless mobile data device over a wireless network;

receiving from the wireless mobile data device at the redirector component information relating to a message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device; and

interfacing the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device to the messaging host system by the redirector component such that a message status change indicator is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the redirector component is operating on the messaging host system.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the redirector component is operating on a host system that is coupled to the messaging host system via the network.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the processing step further comprises encrypting the mail item.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the processing step further comprises compressing the mail item.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein rhe processing step further comprises encoding the mail item.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the processing step further comprises using Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device is a reply mail item generated at the wireless mobile data device.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 wherein the message status change indicator is a replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 wherein the replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the reply mail item was generated at the wireless mobile data device.

11. The method as recited in claim 9 wherein the replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer does not provide an indication that the reply mail item was generated at the wireless mobile data device.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device is a forwarded mail item forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

13. The method as recited in claim 12 wherein the message status change indicator is a forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

14. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the mail item was forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

15. The method as recited in claim 13 wherein the forwarded icon that is associated with the nail item and is viewable via the computer does not provide an indication that the mail item was forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

16. The method as recited in claim 4 wherein the message status change indicator is an icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

17. The method as recited in claim 16 wherein the icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the message status change occurred at the wireless mobile data device.

18. The method as recited in claim 16 wherein the icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer does not provides an indication that the message status change occurred at the wireless mobile data device.

19. A system for redirecting information between a messaging host system and a wireless mobile data device that is associated with a computer connected over a network to the messaging host system, the system comprising:

means for receiving an automatically generated notification indicating receipt of a mail item by the messaging host system, wherein the mail item is addressed to a data store associated with the messaging host system that is viewable via the computer;

means for processing the mail item to add identification information associated with the wireless mobile data device;

means for sending the mail item to the wireless mobile data device over a wireless network;

means for receiving from the wireless mobile data device information relating to a message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device; and

means for interfacing the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device to the messaging host system such that a message status change indicator is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

20. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein the means for processing a mail item further comprises means for encrypting the mail item.

21. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein the means for processing a mail item further comprises means for compressing the mail item.

22. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein the means for processing a mail item further comprises means for encoding the mail item.

23. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein the means for processing a mail item further comprises means for encoding the mail item using Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

24. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device is a reply mail item generated at the wireless mobile data device.

25. The system as recited in claim 24 wherein the message status change indicator is a replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

26. The system as recited in claim 25 wherein the replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the reply mail item was generated at the wireless mobile data device.

27. The system as recited in claim 25 wherein the replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer does not provide an indication that the reply mail item was generated at the wireless mobile data device.

28. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device is a forwarded mail item forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

29. The system as recited in claim 28 wherein the message status change indicator is a forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

30. The system as recited in claim 29 wherein the forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the mail item was forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

31. The system as recited in claim 29 wherein the forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer does not provide an indication that the mail item was forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

32. The system as recited in claim 19 wherein the message status change indicator is an icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

33. The system as recited in claim 32 wherein the icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the message status change occurred at the wireless mobile data device.

34. The system as recited in claim 32 wherein the icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer does not provides an indication that the message status change occurred at the wireless mobile data device.

35. A computer-accessible medium having a sequence of instructions which, when executed by a processing entity, effectuate redirection of information between a messaging host system and a wireless mobile data device that is associated with a computer connected over a network to the messaging host system, the computer-accessible medium comprising:

a code portion for receiving an automatically generated notification indicating receipt of a mail item by the messaging host system, wherein the mail item is addressed to a data store associated with the messaging host system that is viewable via the computer;

a code portion for processing the mail item to add identification information associated with the wireless mobile data device;

a code portion for sending the mail item to the wireless mobile data device over a wireless network;

a code portion for receiving from the wireless mobile data device information relating to a message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device; and

a code portion for interfacing the information relating to the message status change of the mail item ac the wireless mobile data device to the messaging host system such that a message status change indicator is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

36. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 35 wherein the code portion for processing a mail item further comprises a code portion for encrypting the mail item.

37. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 35 wherein the code portion for processing a mail item further comprises a code portion for compressing the mail item.

38. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 35 wherein the code portion for processing a mail item further comprises a code portion for encoding the mail item.

39. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 35 wherein the code portion for processing a mail item further comprises a code portion for encoding the mail item using Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

40. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 35 wherein the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device is a reply mail item generated at the wireless mobile data device.

41. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 40 wherein the message status change indicator is a replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

42. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 41 wherein the replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the reply mail item was generated at the wireless mobile data device.

43. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 41 wherein the replied to icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer does not provide an indication that the reply mail item was generated at the wireless mobile data device.

44. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 35 wherein the information relating to the message status change of the mail item at the wireless mobile data device is a forwarded mail item forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

45. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 44 wherein the message status change indicator is a forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.

46. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 45 wherein the forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer provides an indication that the mail item was forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

47. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 45 wherein the forwarded icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer does not provide an indication that the mail item was forwarded from the wireless mobile data device.

48. The computer-accessible medium as recited in claim 35 wherein the message status change indicator is an icon that is associated with the mail item and is viewable via the computer.
