Abstract

Methods and systems for modifying or enhancing vision are described. In exemplary embodiments, neural or neuromuscular activity is analyzed to determine a focus or other quality of a visual input, and this focus or quality information used as a basis for controlling an adjustable lens system.

Claims

1. A method of modifying a view of a visual environment, comprising the steps of:

a) detecting a neural signal from a subject, said neural signal containing information relating to the focal condition on a retina of said subject of an image of at least a portion of the view of said environment;

b) extracting said information relating to said focal condition from said neural signal;

c) determining a modification to said imaged view based upon said information relating to said focal condition; and

d) adjusting an optical system to produce said modification to said imaged view.

2. A system for providing adaptive vision modification, comprising:

a) a detector for measuring neural activity produced in a subject in response to a real-time varying visual input to an eye of said subject;

b) a signal analyzer for analyzing said neural activity to obtain an indicator of a focal condition of said visual input;

c) an image modulator for modifying said visual input; and

d) a controller for controlling said image modulator in real-time in response to said indicator of focal condition.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein said controller is configured to control said image modulator to cause a specified change in said indicator of focal condition.

The system of claim 2, wherein said controller is configured to perform a comparison of said indicator of focal condition with a reference focal condition value and control said image modulator to decrease the difference between said indicator of focal condition and said reference focal condition value.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein said controller is configured to perform a comparison of said indicator of focal condition with a reference focal condition value and control said image modulator to increase the difference between said indicator of focal condition and said reference focal condition value.

6. The system of claim 2, wherein said image modulator is capable of modifying the intensity of said input image within at least one spectral waveband.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein said spectral waveband is a visible spectral waveband.

8. The system of claim 2, wherein said image modulator is capable of modifying at least one of the focal length of said input image, the magnification of said input image, or an aspect of the cylindrical correction of said input image.

9. A method of controlling a lens system, comprising the steps of:

a) d etecting a neural signal from the nervous system of a subject;

b) d etecting a visual focus-related event in said neural signal, the visual focus-related event correlating with a visual input to at least one eye of said subject; and

c) a diusting an optical element function to modify said visual input in real time in response to said visual focus-related event.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) to provide continuous real time control of said optical element function.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein said visual focus-related event correlates with the perception by said subject of an in-focus state of said visual input.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein said visual focus-related event correlates with the perception by said subject of an out-of-focus state of said visual input.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein said visual focus-related event correlates with an effort by said subject to focus at least one eye on at least a portion of said visual input.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein said visual focus-related event correlates with an effort by said subject to direct the optical axis of at least one eye toward at least a portion of said visual input.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein said optical element is adjusted faster than the intrinsic accommodation time of the lens of said eye.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein said optical element is adjusted faster than the visual pigment reversal rate of at least a subset of the photoreceptors of said eye.

17. The method of claim 9, wherein said optical element is adjusted faster than the intrinsic optical-axis-slewing rate of at least one eye of said subject moving toward at least a portion of said visual input.

18. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) at least about once every 3 seconds.

19. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) at least about once per second.

20. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) at least about three times per second.

21. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate of between about ⅓

Hz and about 10 Hz.

22. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate of between about 1 Hz and about 10 Hz.

23. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate of between about 1 Hz and about 3 Hz.

24. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) at a rate at least as great as an expected intrinsic accommodation rate of said eye of said subject.

25. The method of claim 9, further comprising repeating steps a) through c) at a rate at least as great as an expected visual pigment reversal rate of at least a subset of the photoreceptors of said eye.
