Abstract

A wireless local loop system is provided that includes a wireless base station that communicates with a subscriber station via a wireless link. The wireless link can carry a voice service, such as telephone calls, or a data service, such as internet browsing. The subscriber station includes a steerable antenna. A presently preferred steerable antenna for use with the subscriber station includes a driven element mounted on a base plane that is surrounded by a plurality of parasitic elements also mounted to the base plane. The parasitic elements can be optionally grounded or floated in order to reflect the wireless link towards the driven element. The antenna can be oriented in a desired direction during the transception of a voice or data service. A method of transceiving between a wireless local loop subscriber station and a wireless local loop base station is also provided.

Claims

1. A wireless local loop system for carrying at least one subscriber service between a network and a subscriber terminal via a wireless link, the system comprising:

at least one base station interconnecting the network and the wireless link, the base station operable to transceive the subscriber service over the wireless link; and

a subscriber station interconnecting the subscriber terminal and the wireless link, the subscriber station having a steerable antenna that is operable to be oriented in a direction having a desired transception-quality of the subscriber service over the wireless link, wherein the subscriber station additionally comprises a microprocessor-assembly interconnecting the subscriber terminal and a modem, the microprocessor-assembly being configured for processing the subscriber service, and the modem being configured for modulating and demodulating the subscriber service; and

a radio connected to the modem and for converting the subscriber service for transception over the wireless link, wherein the microprocessor-assembly, the modem, the radio, and the steerable antenna are all housed within a single chassis.

2. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the subscriber service includes a voice service, the subscriber terminal is a voice terminal and the network includes the public switched telephone network.

3. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the subscriber service includes a data service, the subscriber terminal is a data terminal and the network includes the Internet.

4. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the wireless link is based on CDMA.

5. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the subscriber station is fixed within a subscriber'"'"'s premises.

6. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the transception-quality is measured using at least one of the metrics of signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate, frame error rate, bit rate, power level and frame rate of the wireless link.

7. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the desired transception-quality is based on an orientation of the antenna requiring a lowest emitted power level from the subscriber station.

The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the steerable antenna is used for an uplink portion of the wireless link and the subscriber station includes a second steerable antenna used for a downlink portion of the wireless link, each of the antennas being independently steerable in different directions according to a desired transmission-quality of the uplink and a desired reception-quality of the downlink.

9. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the subscriber station includes at least one steerable antenna orientable in both horizontal and vertical planes.

10. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the steerable antenna is electrically steerable.

11. The wireless local loop system of claim 10 wherein the steerable antenna includes at least one driven element and a plurality of parasitic elements that are switchable to influence the wireless link in relation to the driven element such that the antenna transceives the wireless link in the direction.

12. The wireless local loop system of claim 11 wherein the steerable antenna further includes at least one director element that is switchable in order to further influence the wireless link in relation to the driven element such that the antenna transceives the wireless link in the direction.

13. The wireless local loop system of claim 11 wherein the parasitic elements are each switchable between a grounded state for reflecting the wireless link in relation to the driven element and a floating state for appearing invisible in relation to the wireless link.

14. The wireless local loop system of claim 13 wherein the steerable antenna includes one driven element and four parasitic elements peripheral to the driven element.

15. The wireless local loop system of claim 1 wherein the steerable antenna is operable to be oriented in an orientation having a desired transception-quality of the subscriber service over the wireless link by:

determining an appropriate time to orient the steerable antenna;

illuminating the steerable antenna in a given orientation and measuring a transception-quality of a wireless link in the given orientation;

storing the measured transception-quality for later use;

repeating the illuminating and storing steps until a desired number of orientations have been illuminated;

applying a selection criterion to the stored measured transception-qualities to select an orientation that has a desired transception-quality for a subscriber service transmitted over the wireless link; and

orienting the steerable antenna towards the selected orientation.

A subscriber station for a wireless local loop system that carries at least one subscriber service between a network and a subscriber terminal, the system including at least one base station interconnecting the network and a wireless link, the base station operable to transceive the service over the wireless link, the subscriber station comprising:

a microprocessor-assembly interconnecting the subscriber terminal and a modem, the microprocessor-assembly for processing the subscriber service, the modem for modulating and demodulating the service;

a radio connected to the modem and for converting the subscriber service for transception over the wireless link; and

a steerable antenna connected to the radio and operable to be oriented in a direction that achieves a desired transception-quality of the subscriber service over the wireless link, wherein the microprocessor-assembly, the modem, the radio, and the steerable antenna are housed within a chassis.

17. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the subscriber service includes a voice service, the subscriber terminal is a voice terminal and the network includes the public switched telephone network.

18. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the subscriber service includes a data service, the subscriber terminal is a data terminal and the network includes the Internet.

19. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the wireless link is based on CDMA.

20. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the desired transception-quality is based on the orientation requiring the least emitted power level from the subscriber station.

21. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the steerable antenna is used for an uplink portion of the wireless link and subscriber station includes a second steerable antenna used for a downlink portion of the wireless link, each of the antennas being independently steerable in different directions according to desired reception-quality of the downlink and desired transmission-quality of the uplink.

22. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the subscriber station includes at least one steerable antenna orientable in both horizontal and vertical planes.

23. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the wireless link between the subscriber station and the base station is subject to multipath interference.

24. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the subscriber station is fixed within a subscriber'"'"'s premises.

25. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the transception-quality is measured using at least one of the metrics of signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate, frame error rate, bit rate, power level and frame rate of the wireless link.

26. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the steerable antenna is electrically steerable.

27. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the steerable antenna includes at least one driven element and a plurality of parasitic elements that are switchable to influence the wireless link in relation to the driven element such that the antenna transceives the wireless link in the direction.

28. The subscriber station of claim 27 wherein the parasitic elements are each switchable between a grounded state for influencing the wireless link in relation to the driven element and a floating state for appearing invisible in relation to the wireless link.

29. The subscriber station of claim 28 wherein the steerable antenna includes one driven element and four parasitic elements peripheral to the driven element.

30. The subscriber station of claim 16 wherein the steerable antenna is operable to be oriented in an orientation having a desired transception-quality of the subscriber service over the wireless link by:

determining an appropriate time to orient the steerable antenna;

illuminating the steerable antenna in a given orientation and measuring a transception-quality of a wireless link in the given orientation;

storing the measured transception-quality for later use;

repeating the illuminating and storing steps until a desired number of orientations have been illuminated;

applying a selection criterion to the stored measured transception-qualities to select an orientation that has a desired transception-quality for a subscriber service transmitted over the wireless link; and

orienting the steerable antenna towards the selected orientation.

31. An antenna for housing within a single chassis of a wireless local loop subscriber station, the single chassis also housing a modem, a radio, and a microprocessor-assembly for interconnecting a subscriber terminal and the modem, the microprocessor-assembly being configured for processing a subscriber service, the modem being configured for modulating and demodulating the subscriber service, and the radio interconnecting the modem and the antenna for converting the subscriber service for transception over a wireless link, the antenna comprising:

a connecting means for connecting the antenna to the radio of the subscriber station;

at least one driven element for transceiving the subscriber service over the wireless link in communication with a base station, and, a steering means for orienting the driven element in an orientation that achieves a desire transception-quality of the subscriber service over the wireless link.

32. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the subscriber service includes a voice service and the subscriber terminal is a voice terminal.

33. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the subscriber service includes a data service and the subscriber terminal is a data terminal.

34. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the wireless link is based on CDMA.

35. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the subscriber station is fixed within a subscriber'"'"'s premises.

36. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the transception-quality is measured in using at least one of the metrics of signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate, frame error rate, bit rate, power level and frame rate of the wireless link.

37. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the desired transception-quality is based on the orientation requiring the least emitted power level from the subscriber station.

38. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the antenna is used for an uplink portion of the wireless link.

39. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the antenna is used for a downlink portion of the wireless link.

40. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein antenna is orientable in both horizontal and vertical planes.

41. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the steering means is electrical.

42. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the antenna further includes a plurality of parasitic elements and the steering means includes at least one switching means attached to each of the parasitic elements to allow the parasitic elements to be varied in length in relation to the wireless link in order to influence the wireless link in relation to the driven element such that the antenna transceives the wireless link in the direction.

43. The antenna according to claim 42 wherein the parasitic elements are each switchable between a grounded state for influencing the wireless link by reflecting the wireless link towards the driven element and a floating state for appearing invisible in relation to the wireless link.

44. The antenna according to claim 43 wherein the antenna includes one driven element and four parasitic elements peripheral to the driven element.

45. The antenna according to claim 43 further comprising a sleeve coaxial with the driven element, the sleeve sized in relation to the driven element and connected to ground such that an impedance match at edges of an operating frequency range of the antenna are improved.

46. The antenna according to claim 31 wherein the steering means is operable to orient the driven element by:

determining an appropriate time to orient the antenna;

illuminating the antenna in a given orientation and measuring a transception-quality of a wireless link in the given orientation;

storing the measured transception-quality for later use;

repeating the illuminating and storing steps until a desired number of orientations have been illuminated;

applying a selection criterion to the stored measured transception-qualities to select an orientation that has a desired transception-quality for a subscriber service transmitted over the wireless link; and

orienting the antenna towards the selected orientation.

47. A method of orienting a steerable antenna housed in a wireless local loop subscriber station comprising the steps of:

determining whether an appropriate time has been reached to orient the steerable antenna within a wireless local loop system;

if an appropriate time has been reached, then illuminating the steerable antenna in a given orientation and measuring a transception-quality of a wireless link in the given orientation;

storing the measured transception-quality for later use;

repeating the illuminating and storing steps until a desired number of orientations have been illuminated;

applying a selection criterion to the stored measured transception-qualities to select an orientation that has a desired transception-quality for a subscriber service transmitted over the wireless link; and

orienting the steerable antenna towards the selected orientation.

48. The method according to claim 47 wherein each orientation corresponds to a sector of a circle.

49. The method according to claim 47 wherein the desired number of orientations is the entire number of orientations in which the steerable antenna can be oriented.

50. The method according to claim 47 wherein the transception-quality is measured with at least one of the metrics of signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate, frame error rate, bit rate, power level and frame rate of the wireless link.

51. The method according to claim 47 wherein the wireless link is based on CDMA and the desired transception-quality is based on the one of the orientations requiring the least emitted power level from the subscriber station.

52. The method according to claim 47 wherein the appropriate time is reached at a predetermined point during initialization of communication over the wireless link between the subscriber station and a base station.

53. The method according to claim 47 wherein one criterion for determining whether the appropriate time has been reached is whether the subscriber station is in an idle state.

54. The method according to claim 47 wherein the appropriate time has been reached if the subscriber station is in an idle state and the subscriber station is aware of a drop in transception-quality of the wireless link.

55. The method according to claim 47 wherein the appropriate time has been reached if the subscriber station is in an idle state and a predetermined time interval has passed since the steerable antenna has last been oriented.

56. The method according to claim 47 wherein one criterion for determining whether the appropriate time has been reached is the type of subscriber service being carried over the wireless link.

57. The method according to claim 47 wherein the appropriate time has been reached if the subscriber service is a data service that is latency tolerant and the subscriber station is aware of a drop in transception-quality of the wireless link below a predetermined threshold.
