Abstract

An improved system and methods for increasing security at sensitive locations from unwanted third parties through the use of fluidized granular solids.

Claims

1. A security system for inhibiting unauthorized entry by a third party, the system comprising:

a defined surface area extending from a location and adapted for movement of personnel to or from the location;

a first enclosure disposed in the defined surface area, the first enclosure having an open perimeter substantially parallel and proximal to the defined surface area and a majority of the first enclosure being disposed below the defined surface area;

a fluid bed configuration disposed in the first enclosure, the fluid bed configuration including a gas distribution piping array and a plurality of fluidizable granular solids in a surrounding relationship to the gas distribution piping array; and

a fluidizing gas means fluidly connected to the gas distribution array, said fluidizing gas means being activatable by a signal;

wherein when said fluidizing gas means is activated, said fluidizable granular solids become fluidized and unauthorized entry by said third party is inhibited by causing said third party to be at least partially immersed in said granular solids.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the open perimeter of the first enclosure is substantially flush to the surface of the defined surface area.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the defined surface area is substantially planar.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein gas injection nozzles are fluidly connected to the gas distribution piping array.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein a retaining structure is disposed along the perimeter of the first enclosure to inhibit collapse of the defined surface area.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the fluidizing gas means is disposed in a second enclosure having a volume less than the first enclosure.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the fluidizing gas means is a blower.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the fluidizing gas means is an air compressor fluidly connected to a pressurized tank.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein a support structure is disposed within the plurality of fluidizable granular solids.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the support structure is a perforated metal.

11. The system of claim 9, wherein the support structure is a steel grating.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein a guiding structure is disposed with the plurality of fluidizable granular solids to control a vehicle entering the bed when fluidized.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the guiding structure is a wheel guide.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein a shield is disposed over the first enclosure to provide protection from environmental elements.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the first enclosure is in a rectangular configuration.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the defined surface area is selected from the group consisting of a walkway, a roadway, a pathway, an access way, a passageway and any combination thereof.

17. A method of fabricating a security system for inhibiting unauthorized entry by a third party, the steps comprising;

providing a defined surface area extending from a location and adapted for movement of personnel to and from the location;

disposing a first enclosure in the defined area, the first enclosure having an open perimeter substantially parallel and proximal to the defined surface area and a majority of the first enclosure being disposed below the defined surface area;

disposing in the first enclosure a fluid bed configuration, the fluid bed configuration including a gas distribution piping array and a plurality of fluidizable granular solids in a surrounding relationship to the gas distribution piping array; and

fluidly connecting a fluidizing gas means, said fluidizing gas means being activatable by a signal, to the gas distribution piping array whereby fluidizing gas is provided to the piping array to fluidize the granular solids;

wherein when said fluidizing gas means is activated, said plurality of fluidizable granular solids become fluidized and unauthorized entry by said third party is inhibited by causing said third party to be at least partially immersed in said granular solids.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the perimeter of the first enclosure is substantially below or flush to the planar surface of the defined area.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the fluidizing gas means is disposed in a second enclosure having a volume less than the first enclosure.

20. A method for inhibiting movement by an unauthorized third party at a location, the steps comprising;

providing a security system for inhibiting unauthorized entry by a third party, wherein the security system comprises a defined surface area extending from a location and adapted for movement of personnel to or from the location;

a first enclosure disposed in the defined surface area, the first enclosure having an open perimeter substantially parallel and proximal to the defined surface area and a majority of the first enclosure being disposed below the defined surface area;

a fluid bed configuration disposed in the first enclosure, the fluid bed configuration including a gas distribution piping array and a plurality of fluidizable granular solids in a surrounding relation to the gas distribution piping array; and

a fluidizing gas means fluidly connected to the gas distribution piping array;

detecting the presence of the unauthorized third party; and

fluidizing the fluid bed configuration so that movement of the unauthorized third party is inhibited when the party enters the open perimeter of the first enclosure.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the bed is defluidized once the movement of the unauthorized third party is inhibited.

22. A security system for inhibiting movement of a third party, said security system comprising:

a first enclosure disposed in ground, said first enclosure having a perimeter wall and an opening that defines an upper surface area;

a retaining structure positioned at said perimeter wall of said first enclosure to inhibit collapse of said first enclosure;

a plurality of fluidizable granular particles disposed in said first enclosure;

a plurality of gas distribution nozzles, wherein said gas distribution nozzles are positioned near said plurality of granular particles;

a gas flow generator adapted to be activated by a signal caused by the presence of said third party, said gas flow generator connected to said gas distribution nozzles;

wherein when said gas flow generator is activated, said fluidizable granular particles become fluidized and said third party becomes at least partially submerged in said fluidizable granular particles.

23. The security system of claim 22, further comprising a support structure, said support structure located at said opening of said first enclosure.

24. The security system of claim 23, wherein said support structure is disposed on top of said plurality of fluidizable granular particles.

25. The security system of claim 23, said support structure comprising a metallic grating.

26. The security system of claim 25, said metallic grating having an open surface area of about 40% to 70%.

27. The security system of claim 25, said metallic grating comprising steel.

28. The security system of claim 22, said plurality of fluidizable granular particles having a range of 40 to 100 U.S. Mesh particle size.

29. The security system of claim 28, said plurality of fluidizable granular particles having a range of 60 to 80 U.S. Mesh particle size.

30. The security system of claim 22, further comprising a guiding structure disposed in said plurality of fluidizable granular particles.

31. The security system of claim 22, further comprising a shield positioned above said opening of said first enclosure to protect said fluidizable granular particles.

32. The security system of claim 22, further comprising a heater, said heater used to supply low-flow gas to said fluidizable granular particles.

33. A security system for inhibiting movement of an object, said security system comprising:

a first enclosure, said first enclosure having a perimeter wall and an opening that defines an upper surface area, said upper surface area being substantially level with a defined surface area around said upper surface area;

a plurality of fluidizable granular particles disposed in said first enclosure;

a support structure, said support structure positioned at said opening on said fluidizable granular particles;

a gas distribution piping array connected to a plurality of gas nozzles, said nozzles directed to distribute gas to said plurality of granular particles;

a gas flow generator adapted to be triggered by a signal, said gas flow generator connected to said gas distribution nozzles;

wherein when said gas flow generator is triggered, gas is applied to said fluidizable granular particles and said fluidizable granular particles become fluidized, and said object becomes at least partially submerged in said fluidizable granular particles.

34. The security system of claim 33, further comprising a retaining structure positioned at said perimeter wall of said first enclosure to inhibit collapse of said first enclosure.

35. The security system of claim 33, wherein said defined surface area is selected from the group consisting of a walkway, a roadway, a pathway, an access way, a passageway and any combination thereof.

36. The security system of claim 33, wherein said gas flow generator is disposed in a second enclosure having a volume less than said first enclosure.

37. The security system of claim 33, wherein the gas flow generator comprises a blower.

38. The security system of claim 33, wherein the gas flow generator comprises an air compressor fluidly connected to a pressurized tank.

39. The security system of claim 33, said support structure comprising a metallic grating.

40. The security system of claim 39, said metallic grating having an open surface area of about 40% to 70%.

41. The security system of claim 40, said metallic grating comprising steel.

42. The security system of claim 33, said plurality of fluidizable granular particles having a range of 40 to 100 U.S. Mesh particle size.

43. The security system of claim 42, said plurality of fluidizable granular particles having a range of 60 to 80 U.S. Mesh particle size.

44. The security system of claim 33, further comprising a guiding structure disposed in said plurality of fluidizable granular particles.

45. The security system of claim 33, further comprising a shield positioned above said opening of said first enclosure to protect said fluidizable granular particles.

46. The security system of claim 33, further comprising a heater, said heater used to supply low-flow heated gas to said fluidizable granular particles.

47. A security system for inhibiting movement of an object, said security system comprising:

a first enclosure, said first enclosure having a perimeter wall and an opening that defines an upper surface area, said upper surface area being substantially level with a defined surface area around said upper surface area;

a retaining structure positioned at said perimeter wall of said first enclosure to inhibit collapse of said first enclosure;

a gas distribution piping array connected to a plurality of gas nozzles, said nozzles directed to distribute gas;

a gas flow generator adapted to be triggered by a signal, said gas flow generator connected to said gas distribution nozzles;

wherein when said gas flow generator is triggered and when fluidizable granular particles are distributed in said first enclosure, gas is applied to said fluidizable granular particles and said fluidizable granular particles become fluidized, and said object becomes at least partially submerged in said fluidizable granular particles.
