1. A method for multipoint-to-point communication, the method comprising:
- receiving at a host a plurality of upstream symbols transmitted from a plurality of remote units;
wherein the upstream symbols are transmitted on a plurality of orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform, and wherein the upstream symbols are demodulated for reception using a Fourier transform;
determining respective round trip path delay values associated with each of at least two of the plurality of remote units;
wherein determining respective round trip path delay values, determines a round trip path delay value for a remote unit based on a time of reception at the host of a first signal from the remote unit;
wherein a time of transmission of the first signal from the remote unit is based on a time of reception at the remote unit of a second signal from the host;
transmitting information to each of the at least two remote units based on the respective round trip path delay values determined for each of the at least two remote units; and
receiving at the host at least one upstream symbol from each of the at least two remote units at the same time.

Abstract
Systems and methods for round-trip-delay adjustment in a multipoint-to-point orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system are provided. In one embodiment, a method for multipoint-to-point communication comprises: receiving at a host a plurality of upstream symbols transmitted from a plurality of remote units, the upstream symbols transmitted on a plurality of orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform; and determining respective round trip path delay values associated with each of at least two of the plurality of remote units.

7. A system comprising:
-
a plurality of remote units; and a host unit communicatively coupled to the plurality of remote units in a multipoint-to-point configuration; wherein the host unit receives an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform comprising a plurality of orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform; wherein orthogonal carriers of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform modulated by least two of the plurality of remote units are received at the host unit at the same time; the host unit programmed to calculate a round trip delay time value for each of at least two of the plurality of remote units, the round trip delay time value representing an elapsed time between transmitting a first signal to a remote unit and receiving a second signal from the remote unit in response to the first signal; and the host unit programmed to transmit one or more timing adjustments to each of the at least two of the plurality of remote units to delay upstream transmissions based on the respective round trip path delay values associated with each of the at least two of the plurality of remote units. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11)

12. A method for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) multipoint-to-point communications system, the method comprising:
-
establishing communication between a first remote unit of a plurality of remote units and a host unit, the plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the host unit in a multipoint-to-point configuration using a coherent OFDM waveform having a plurality of orthogonal carriers, the plurality orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform; wherein an upstream signal on a first orthogonal carrier from the first remote unit combines with an upstream signal on a second orthogonal carrier from at least one other remote unit to form the coherent OFDM waveform; wherein the upstream signal on the first orthogonal carrier and the upstream signal on the second orthogonal carrier arrive at the host unit at the same time; and adjusting the timing of at least one signal transmitted between the first remote unit and the host unit based on a round trip delay; wherein adjusting the timing of at least one signal adjusts the timing such that an adjusted round trip delay for the first remote unit is substantially the same as a round trip delay for each of the plurality of remote units. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15)
