Abstract

A system, method and program product for monitoring a complex signal for ultrasensitive detection of state changes, or for signature recognition and classification is provided. A complex signal is decomposed periodically for empirical modeling. Wavelet analysis, frequency band filtering or other methods may be used to decompose the complex signal into components. A library of signature data may be referenced for selection of a recognized signature in the decomposed complex signal. The recognized signature may indicate data being carried in the complex signal. Estimated signal data may be generated for determination of an operational state of a monitored process or machine using a statistical hypothesis test with reference to the decomposed input signal.

Claims

1. An apparatus for monitoring the operating condition of a system, comprising:

sensor means for acquiring a time-varying signal from a single sensor and characterizing operation of the system;

means for decomposing said time-varying signal into a plurality of component signals, each component signal at least partially representing the same time period as all of the other component signals, the component signals providing a plurality of actual component values, at least some of the actual component values from different component signals representing the same moment in time, the plurality of actual component values forming an actual snapshot;

a memory for storing a plurality of reference snapshots of component values for known operating conditions; and

processor means responsive to the decomposing means, disposed to generate estimates of the component values using a similarity operation on the actual component values from the decomposing means with reference to the component values in each reference snapshot in the memory, according to;

2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said processor means is further disposed to perform a sequential probability ratio test on successive residual values for determining deviating operating conditions of the system.

3. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said processor means generates said estimates using a similarity operator in which a difference between two values is normalized with an expected range for said values.

4. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the similarity operation determines similarity between snapshots of component values as a function of the Euclidean distance of the snapshots.

5. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said similarity operator provides a similarity value S for the comparison of two snapshots equal to:

6. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said sensor means measures vibration of said system.

7. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said sensor means measures acoustic energy given off of said system.

8. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said sensor means measures electric current used in said system.

9. An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said sensor means measures an electrocardiogram.

10. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said processor means is further disposed to determine whether a residual value exceeds a threshold for determining deviating operating conditions of the system.

11. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said estimates are further divided by the sum of the elements of the vector w-hat:

12. A method for monitoring the operating condition of a system, comprising the steps of:

acquiring a time-varying signal from a single sensor characterizing operation of the system;

periodically extracting observations of features from said time-varying signal, each feature relating to a component signal, each component signal at least partially representing the same moment in time as all of the other component signals acquired from the time-carrying signal;

generating estimates for at least one of the extracted features responsive to extracting an observation of features, using a similarity operation with reference to a stored library of feature observations characteristic of acceptable operation of said system, according to;

13. A method according to claim 12, wherein said step of determining comprises determining whether at least one of said residuals exceeds a threshold.

14. A method according to claim 12, wherein said step of determining comprising performing a sequential probability ratio test on at least one of said residuals.

15. A method according to claim 12, where said estimate generating step uses a similarity operation that normalizes a comparison of corresponding values of a feature from two feature observations with an expected range of variation for that feature.

16. A method according to claim 12, wherein the step of extracting features includes generating a power spectral density function for said time-varying signal.

17. A method according to claim 12, wherein the step of extracting features includes determining waveler coefficients for said time-varying signal.

A method according to claim 12, further comprising the step of providing said stored library of feature observations by selecting from previously acquired feature data of said system at least those observations wherein a feature value represents either the largest or smallest value for that feature across the previously acquired feature data.

19. A method according to claim 12, wherein said system is a biological heart, and said time-varying signal is an electrocardiogram.
