Abstract

A display has a first array of pixels connected to emit individually-controlled amounts of light onto a second array of pixels. The second array of pixels is connected to pass individually-controllable portions of the light. The display has a controller connected to control the pixels of the first and second arrays of pixels. The controller is configured to control the pixels of the first array of pixels to provide on the second array of pixels an approximation of an image specified by image data; determine a difference between the image and the approximation of the image at individual pixels of the second array of pixels; and control the pixels of the second array of pixels to modulate the approximation of the image according to the corresponding determined differences.

Claims

1. A display controller, the controller connectible to:

receive image data defining a desired image; and

,

control light outputs of pixels in a first array of pixels and light transmission of pixels of a second array of pixels illuminated by light emitted by the first array of pixels, the controller configured to;

generate first control signals for the first array of pixels to yield an approximation of the desired image on the second array of pixels;

determine light intensities of the approximation at pixels of the second array of pixels; and

generate second control signals for the pixels of the second array of pixels based at least in part on differences between the determined light intensities and the desired image at the pixels of the second array of pixels.

2. A controller according to claim 1 wherein, for each pixel of the first array of pixels, the second array of pixels has more than one pixel, and wherein the controller is configured to:

set a pixel of the first array of pixels to contribute a luminance which is an average, or weighted average, of a plurality of desired luminance values for image areas of the first array of pixels that correspond to that pixel of the first array of pixels.

3. A controller according to claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

control the pixels of the second array of pixels to modulate light incident thereon based on desired luminance values at image locations corresponding to locations of the pixels of the second array of pixels divided by the determined intensities of light from the first array of pixels at the pixels of the second array of pixels.

4. A controller according to claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

set a pixel of the first array of pixels to a brightness level selected from a number N of discrete brightness levels; and

set a pixel of the second array of pixels to a brightness level selected from a number M of discrete brightness levels, wherein N is greater than M.

5. A controller according to claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to:

set a pixel of the first array of pixels to a brightness level selected from a number N of discrete brightness levels; and

set a pixel of the second array of pixels to a brightness level selected from a number M of discrete brightness levels, wherein N is less than M.

A controller according to claim 1 wherein the pixels of the second array of pixels have controllable retro-reflection properties, and wherein the controller is configured to control the pixels of the second array of pixels by adjusting retro-reflection properties of the pixels of the second array of pixels.

A controller according to claim 1 wherein the pixels of the second array of pixels have controllable transmission properties, and wherein the controller is configured to control the pixels of the second array of pixels by adjusting transmission properties of the pixels of the second array of pixels.

8. A controller according to claim 1 wherein the first array of pixels comprises an array of color pixels, wherein the controller is configured to control the pixels of the first array of pixels by separately setting a color value for each pixel of the first array of pixels.

9. A controller according to claim 8 wherein the controller is configured to control the pixels of the first array of pixels by separately setting a plurality of color values for each pixel of the first array of pixels.

10. A controller according to claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to determine the light intensities of the approximation at pixels of the second array of pixels by estimating light emitted from the first array of pixels.

11. A controller according to claim 10 wherein the controller is configured to estimate the light emitted from the first array of pixels based at least in part on a spread function of a pixel of the first array of pixels.

12. A controller according to claim 11 wherein the spread function of the pixel of the first array of pixels has a full width at half-maximum in the range of 0.3×

A controller according to claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to determine the light intensities of the approximation at pixels of the second array of pixels by, for a pixel of the second array of pixels, calculating a contribution from each of a plurality of pixels of the first array of pixels which illuminate that pixel of the second array of pixels.

A controller according to claim 13 wherein the controller is configured to calculate the contribution from each of the plurality of pixels of the first array of pixels which illuminate that pixel of the second array of pixels based at least in part on a spread function of a pixel of the first array of pixels.

15. A controller according to claim 14 wherein the spread function of the pixel of the first array of pixels has a full width at half-maximum in the range of 0.3×

d₂, where d₂ is a center-to-center inter-pixel spacing of pixels of the first array of pixels.

The display controller according to claim 1, wherein the individually-controlled amounts of light emitted by the first array of pixels are controlled in steps of light intensity that are coarser than steps of light intensity of the individually-controlled portions of light passed by the second array of pixels.

17. The display controller according to claim 1, wherein:

a pixel size of the first array of pixels is larger than a pixel size of the second array of pixels;

each pixel of the first array of pixels corresponds to and is configured to illuminate a plurality of pixels in the second array of pixels; and

the differences between the determined light intensities and the desired image at the pixels of the second array of pixels comprise differences that compensate for artifacts which result at least in part from each pixel of the first array of pixels being common to a plurality of pixels of the second array of pixels.

18. A display comprising:

a first array of pixels connected to emit individually-controlled amounts of light onto a second array of pixels, the second array of pixels connected to pass individually-controllable portions of the light; and

,

a controller connected to the first array of pixels and the second array of pixels;

wherein;

the controller is configured to,

control the pixels of the first array of pixels to provide on the second array of pixels an approximation of an image specified by image data;

determine a difference between the image and the approximation of the image at individual pixels of the second array of pixels, and

control the pixels of the second array of pixels to modulate the approximation of the image according to the corresponding determined differences.

19. A display according to claim 18 wherein a pixel of the first array of pixels emits light onto a plurality of pixels of the second array of pixels, and light from a plurality of pixels of the first array of pixels is incident on a pixel of the second array of pixels.

20. A display according to claim 18 wherein the first array of pixels has fewer pixels than the second array of pixels.

21. A display according to claim 18 wherein light emitted by a pixel of the first array of pixels is characterized by a spread function having a full width at half-maximum in the range of 0.3×

22. A display according to claim 18 wherein the controller is configured to:

control a pixel of the first array of pixels to emit light having a brightness level selected from a number N of discrete brightness levels; and

control a pixel of the second array of pixels to have a transmissivity level selected from a number M of discrete transmissivity levels, wherein N is greater than M.

23. A display according to claim 18 wherein the controller is configured to:

control a pixel of the first array of pixels to emit light having a brightness level selected from a number N of discrete brightness levels; and

control a pixel of the second array of pixels to have a transmissivity level selected from a number M of discrete transmissivity levels, wherein N is less than M.

24. A display according to claim 18 comprising a diffuser located on a side of the second array of pixels which faces away from the first array of pixels.

25. A display according to claim 18 comprising an optical system positioned between the first array of pixels and the second array of pixels for imaging the light emitted by the pixels of the first array of pixels onto the second array of pixels.

26. The display according to claim 18, wherein the display comprises a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen.

27. The display according to claim 18, wherein the difference between the image and the approximation of the image at individual pixels of the second array of pixels comprises a difference resulting at least in part from a pixel size differential between pixels in the first array of pixels and pixels in the second array of pixels.

28. The display according to claim 18, wherein the controller is further configured to control the pixels of the first array of pixels and the pixels of the second array of pixels on-the-fly.

29. The display according to claim 18, wherein:

the controller is further configured to receive an image signal, and, based on the image signal, produce first and second control signals;

the first control signal is configured to control the pixels of the first array of pixels and the second control signal is configured to control the pixels of the second array of pixels; and

at least part of at least one of the first and second control signals is based on a pre-processing of the image signal.

30. The display according to claim 18, wherein the second array of pixels has in the range of 8 to 144 pixels for each pixel in the first array of pixels.

31. The display according to claim 18, wherein:

the controller is further configured to receive an image signal, and, based on the image signal, provide, on-the-fly, a first control signal configured to control the pixels of the first array of pixels and a second control signal configured to control the pixels of the second array of pixels;

the individually-controlled amounts of light emitted by the first array of pixels are controlled in steps of intensity that are coarser than steps of intensity of the individually-controlled portions of light passed by the second array of pixels;

a pixel size of the first array of pixels is larger than a pixel size of the second array of pixels; and

each pixel of the first array of pixels corresponds to and is configured to illuminate a plurality of pixels in the second array of pixels.

32. The display according to claim 31, wherein:

at least part of at least one of the first and second control signals is based on a pre-processing of the image signal;

the second array of pixels has in the range of 8 to 144 pixels for each pixel in the first array of pixels; and

the differences between the determined light intensities and the desired image at the pixels of the second array of pixels comprise differences that compensate for artifacts which result at least in part from each pixel of the first array of pixels being common to a plurality of pixels of the second array of pixels.

33. The display according to claim 31, wherein the second array of pixels comprises a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen.

34. The display according to claim 33, wherein the pixels of the first array of pixels are monochrome pixels and the pixels of the second array of pixels are color pixels.

35. A method of displaying an image on a display comprising a first array of pixels which emit light onto a second array of pixels, the method comprising:

controlling the first array of pixels to yield a pattern of light which approximates an image specified by image data on the second array of pixels;

determining a difference between the pattern of light at a pixel of the second array of pixels and a corresponding location of the image specified by the image data; and

,

controlling the pixel of the second array of pixels based on the determined difference;

selecting a brightness level of a pixel of the first array of pixels from a number N of discrete brightness levels; and

,

selecting a transmissivity level of the pixel of the second array of pixels from a number M of discrete transmissivity levels, wherein N is greater than M.

36. A method of displaying an image on a display comprising a first array of pixels which emit light onto a second array of pixels, the method comprising:

controlling the first array of pixels to yield a pattern of light which approximates an image specified by image data on the second array of pixels;

determining a difference between the pattern of light at a pixel of the second array of pixels and a corresponding location of the image specified by the image data; and

,

controlling the pixel of the second array of pixels based on the determined difference;

selecting a brightness level of a pixel of the array of pixels from a number N of discrete brightness levels; and

,

selecting a transmissivity level of the pixel of the second array of pixels from a number M of discrete transmissivity levels, wherein N is less than M.
