Abstract

A pulse oximeter sensor comprising an emitter and a detector disposed on a substrate layer with a thinned portion between the emitter and the detector. A partially transparent covering layer covers the substrate layer and comprises a corresponding thinned portion. The thinned portions attenuate light shunted via the substrate layer and the partially transparent covering layer from the emitter to the detector, and may be configured such that less than 10% of the light detectable by the detector is shunted light.

Claims

1. A sensor comprising:

a light emitter;

a first layer coupled to the light emitter;

a light detector;

a second layer coupled to the light detector; and

an air gap forming a shunt barrier, the air gap disposed between an end of the first layer and an end of the second layer.

2. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the shunt barrier is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is light.

3. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the shunt barrier is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is light shunted through the first layer and the second layer.

4. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the shunt barrier comprises an opaque film disposed over the air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

5. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the shunt barrier comprises a third layer coupled to one side of the first layer and one side of the second layer so as to bridge the air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

6. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first layer and the second layer each comprise at least one transparent portion.

7. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first layer comprises a window for the light emitter and the second layer comprises a window for the light detector.

8. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the first layer comprises an opening for the light emitter and the second layer comprises an opening for the light detector.

9. The sensor of claim 1, comprising a substrate layer, wherein the light emitter and the light detector are mounted on the substrate layer.

10. A sensor substrate comprising:

a first layer comprising a location for a light emitter;

a second layer comprising a location for a light detector; and

an air gap forming a shunt barrier, the air gap disposed between an end of the first layer and an end of the second layer.

11. The sensor substrate of claim 10, wherein the shunt barrier is configured to attenuate light shunted from the location for the light emitter to the location for the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable at the location for the light detector is light shunted through the first layer and the second layer.

12. The sensor substrate of claim 10, wherein the shunt barrier is configured to attenuate light shunted from the location for the light emitter to the location for the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable at the location for the light detector is light shunted through the first layer and the second layer.

13. The sensor substrate of claim 10, comprising an underlying layer, wherein the first layer and the second layer are coupled to the underlying layer.

14. The sensor substrate of claim 10, wherein the shunt barrier comprises an opaque film disposed over the air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

15. The sensor substrate of claim 10, wherein the shunt barrier comprises a third layer coupled to one side of the first layer and one side of the second layer so as to bridge the air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

16. The sensor substrate of claim 10, wherein the first layer and the second layer each comprise at least one transparent portion.

17. The sensor substrate of claim 16, wherein the first layer comprises a solid transparent portion over a light emitting side of the emitter and the second layer comprises a solid transparent portion over a light detecting side of the detector.

18. A method of manufacturing a sensor comprising:

providing a light emitter coupled to a first layer and a light detector coupled to a second layer;

providing an air gap to form a shunt barrier, the air gap disposed between an end of the first layer and an end of the second layer.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein providing the shunt barrier comprises configuring the shunt barrier to attenuate light shunted from the location for the light emitter and the location for the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable at the location for the light detector is shunted light.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein providing the shunt barrier comprises configuring the shunt barrier to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein providing the light emitter and the light detector comprises coupling the light emitter to the first layer, coupling the light detector to the second layer, and coupling the first layer and the second layer to a substrate layer.

22. The method of claim 18, wherein providing the shunt barrier comprises disposing an opaque film disposed over the air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

23. The method of claim 18, wherein providing the shunt barrier comprises providing a third layer coupled to one side of the first layer and one side of the second layer so as to bridge the air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

24. The method of claim 18, wherein providing the light emitter and the light detector comprises providing the light emitter coupled to the first layer and the light detector coupled to the second layer, the first layer and the second layer each comprising at least one transparent portion.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein providing the light emitter and the light detector comprises providing the light emitter coupled to the first layer and the light detector coupled to the second layer, the first layer comprising a solid transparent portion over a light emitting side of the emitter and the second layer comprising a solid transparent portion over a light detecting side of the detector.

26. A method of operating a sensor comprising:

emitting light at a patient with a light emitter coupled to a first layer;

detecting light from the patient with a light detector coupled to a second layer; and

attenuating light passing through the first layer and the second layer using an air gap which forms a shunt barrier disposed between the first layer and the second layer.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein attenuating light comprises attenuating light such that less than 1% of light detectable at the location for the light detector is light shunted through the first layer and the second layer.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein attenuating light comprises attenuating light such that less than 10% of light detectable at the location for the light detector is shunted light.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein emitting light at the patient comprises emitting light at the patient with the light emitter coupled to the first layer, the first layer being coupled to a substrate layer, and wherein detecting light from the patient comprises detecting light from the patient with the light detector coupled to the second layer, the second layer being coupled to the substrate layer.

30. The method of claim 26, wherein attenuating light comprises attenuating light using an opaque film disposed over an air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

31. The method of claim 26, wherein attenuating light comprises attenuating light using a third layer coupled to one side of the first layer and one side of the second layer so as to bridge the air gap between the end of the first layer and the end of the second layer.

32. The method of claim 26, wherein emitting light at the patient comprises emitting light at the patient with the light emitter coupled to the first layer, the first layer comprising at least one transparent portion, and wherein detecting light comprises detecting light from the patient with the light detector coupled to the second layer, the second layer comprising at least one transparent portion.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein emitting light at the patient comprises emitting light at the patient with the light emitter coupled to the first layer, the first layer comprising a solid transparent portion over a light emitting side of the light emitter, and wherein detecting light from the patient comprises detecting light from the patient with the light detector coupled to the second layer, the second layer comprising a solid transparent portion over a light detecting side of the light detector.

34. A sensor comprising:

a light emitter;

a first layer coupled to the light emitter;

a light detector;

a second layer coupled to the light detector, wherein a transverse end of the second layer is separated from a transverse end of the first layer by a gap; and

a shunt barrier comprising a fibrous material disposed over the gap, wherein the shunt barrier extends from over a portion of the first layer at the transverse end of the first layer to over a portion of the second layer at the transverse end of the second layer, and wherein the shunt barrier extends between the transverse end of the first layer and the transverse end of the second layer to fill the gap.

35. The sensor of claim 34, wherein the fibrous material comprises a woven material.

36. The sensor of claim 34, wherein the fibrous material comprises a third layer coupled to one side of the first layer and one side of the second layer.

37. A sensor comprising:

a light emitter assembly;

a first layer coupled to the light emitter assembly;

a light detector assembly;

a second layer coupled to the light detector assembly, wherein a transverse end of the second layer is separated from a transverse end of the first layer by a gap; and

a shunt barrier disposed over the gap, wherein the shunt barrier comprises a third layer extending from over a portion of the first layer at the transverse end of the first layer to over a portion of the second layer at the transverse end of the second layer, wherein the third layer comprises an adhesive configured to adhere a portion of the third layer to a tissue location on a patient, so as to at least partially close the gap with the portion of the third layer.

38. A sensor comprising:

a light emitter assembly;

a first layer coupled to the light emitter assembly;

a light detector assembly;

a second layer coupled to the light detector assembly, wherein a transverse end of the second layer is separated from a transverse end of the first layer by a gap;

a third layer coupled to at least the transverse end of the first layer to at least the transverse end of the second layer, the third layer extending over the gap; and

a pad disposed on the third layer within the gap and configured to compress against a tissue location on a patient.
