Data synchronization of multiple remote storage after remote copy suspension
First Claim
1. A remote copy system comprising:
- a first storage system including a first storage controller and a first data volume, the first storage controller being configured to receive a write request from a first host associated with the first storage system and to store write data associated with the write request to the first data volume;
a second storage system coupled to the first storage system, including a second storage controller and a second data volume, the second storage controller receiving first data containing the write data to copy data stored in the first data volume to the second data volume; and
a third storage system coupled to the second storage system, including a third storage controller and a third data volume, the third storage controller receiving second data containing the write data to copy data stored in the first data volume to the third data volume,wherein the second storage system manages first status information indicating whether or not the write data is sent from the first storage system to the third storage system,wherein the third storage system manages second status information indicating a state of the third storage volume,wherein the second storage system and the third storage system synchronize the second data volume and the third data volume by using the first status information and the second status information when the first storage system experiences failure.

Abstract
A method and apparatus are provided for enhancing the performance of storage systems to allow recovery after all types of suspensions in remote copy operations. Data is synchronized after an interruption in transfer between a first storage volume of a primary storage system and a first storage volume of a secondary storage system which also includes a second storage volume. After the interruption is detected, at the primary storage system, a record is provided of the data written onto the first storage volume of the primary storage system, and at the secondary storage volume a record is provided of the data written onto the first storage volume of the secondary storage system. Then, at least a partial copy of the record of the data written onto the first storage volume of the primary storage system is written onto the second storage volume. Using the copy, the first storage volume of the secondary storage system is synchronized with the second storage volume of the secondary storage system.
