1. A device for controlling microbial growth in potable water systems, said device comprising:

  • a flow-through housing having a housing wall structure, a housing volume surrounded by the housing wall structure, and one or more openings within the housing wall structure; and

    fluid treatment media occupying at least a portion of the housing volume within the flow-through housing, said fluid treatment media comprising a physical mixture of;

    a first set of particles or beads comprising an anti-microbial component coating on a support material with the anti-microbial component coating comprising one or more coating layers on said support material, said anti-microbial component comprising silver and said support material comprising alumina; and

    a second set of particles or beads comprising a scale inhibitor comprising glassy polyphosphate particles;

    wherein the support material has a particle size that prevents the support material from escaping the one or more openings within the housing wall structure.
