System and method for selecting a setting by continuous or discrete controls
First Claim
1. A graphical user interface stored on one or more computer readable storage media and executable on a computer, said graphical user interface comprising:
- a screen display for displaying a plurality of available file view modes, a plurality of controls available for selection of a setting within a file view mode, and a file list window including at least one item; and
a view control, presented in the screen display, including a continuous control and a discrete control and operable to obtain, according to user choice, selection of said setting by the continuous control or the discrete control, and operable to obtain a single user input indicative of both a selected file view mode and a setting within the selected file view mode, the selected file view mode and the selected setting defining a presentation scheme for the at least one item presented in the file list window, and the selected setting determining size of at least one item in the file list window, wherein the continuous control has a setting selection indicator which visually indicates a current selection, andwherein the size of the at least one item presented in the file list window changes in response to said setting being selected by movement of the setting selection indicator.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for selecting a setting within a selected view mode for displaying one or more items in a screen display. Continuous and discrete controls are simultaneously presented to the user. Input is accepted from either the continuous control or from the discrete control. The input mechanism can be a hardware device, such as a keyboard or mouse, or a software control presented in a graphical user interface. The continuous control includes a setting range display, visually indicating the range over which the setting may be adjusted, and a setting selection indicator visually indicating the current selection. The discrete setting control has a mode range display and a set of one or more discrete default settings which are available for selection.
