Abstract

A connector for a communications system provides desired levels of crosstalk by controlling the positions and lengths of the wires. A plurality of insulation displacement contacts are movable between retracted positions and inserted positions extending into an internal chamber of the connector. A first insert disposed in the internal chamber has a front end proximal the front end of the plug housing. A second insert is partially disposed in the internal chamber and has a front end proximal the first insert rear end. Four pairs of wires extend from a cable sheath. Each pair of wires pass through one of the first, second, third and fourth channels of the second insert and through the first passageway of the first insert to the insulation displacement contacts in the internal chamber.

Claims

1. A connector for a communications system, comprising:

a plug housing having front and rear ends, an internal chamber opening on said rear end and defined by housing walls, and a plurality of slots extending through one of said housing walls adjacent said front end and into said internal chamber;

a first insert disposed in said internal chamber having a front end proximal said front end of said plug housing, a first passageway extending from said front end of said first insert to said first insert rear end, said first passageway being continuous and uninterrupted, a plurality of openings in a first insert wall adjacent said front end and aligned with said plurality of slots in said plug housing and extending into said first passageway;

a second insert disposed in said internal chamber having a front end proximal said first insert rear end; and

an overmold extending between and partially surrounding a cable sheath and said plug housing.

2. The connector for a communications system according to claim 1, wherein

a latch extends from said plug housing;

and

a projection extends outwardly from said overmold to prevent snagging of said latch.

3. The connector for a communications system according to claim 1, wherein

a portion of said overmold is disposed in said internal chamber.

4. The connector for a communications system according to claim 1, wherein

a portion of said first insert is surrounded by said overmold.

5. The connector for a communications system according to claim 4, wherein

said overmold is formed on said first insert rearward of said slots.

6. The connector for a communications system according to claim 5, wherein

said overmold substantially surrounds said second insert.

7. The connector for a communications system according to claim 2, wherein

said projection is unitarily formed with said overmold.

8. The connector for a communications system according to claim 1, wherein

said overmold is a low temperature, low pressure overmold.

9. The connector for a communications system according to claim 1, wherein

said overmold is formed of a high dielectric material.

10. The connector for a communications system according to claim 2, wherein

the entirety of said projection is disposed rearwardly of said latch.

11. The connector for a communications system according to claim 10, wherein

said projection extends radially outwardly.
