1. A lighting system comprising:

  • a power supply circuit electrically connected to a primary coil, said power supply circuit applying power to said primary coil, said primary coil generating an electromagnetic field;

    a plurality of lamp assemblies, each of said lamp assemblies including a secondary coil and a light source; and

    a receptacle disposed within said electromagnetic field, said receptacle receiving one or more of said plurality of lamp assemblies, whereby light output by the lighting assembly can be selectively varied by changing a number of said plurality of lamp assemblies disposed within said receptacle; and

    wherein said power supply circuit determines a cumulative load characteristic when a plurality of lamp assemblies are disposed within said receptable, whereby said power supply circuit varies said power applied to said primary as a function of said cumulative load characteristic.
