1. A method of locating a wireless local area network, WLAN, when a mobile terminal is operating in a cellular communication network, said method comprising the steps of:

  • determining a position of the mobile terminal utilizing a procedure that minimizes battery consumption in the mobile terminal, said procedure including;

    determining a level of battery consumption in the mobile terminal for each of a plurality of locating methodologies;

    determining whether each locating methodology is available; and

    selecting an available methodology with the lowest level of battery consumption to determine the position of the mobile terminal;

    retrieving from a WLAN database, a position associated with a WLAN operating within the coverage area of the cellular network;

    determining whether the position of the mobile terminal is close enough to the position of the WLAN for the mobile terminal to connect to the WLAN; and

    if the position of the mobile terminal is close enough to the position of the WLAN for the mobile terminal to connect to the WLAN, sending a notification from the cellular network to the mobile terminal indicating that the mobile terminal is within range of the WLAN.
