Abstract

Systems and methods for introducing one or more stimulating drugs and/or applying electrical stimulation to the brain to at least treat or prevent diabetes uses at least one system control unit (SCU) producing electrical pulses delivered via electrodes implanted in the brain and/or producing drug infusion pulses, wherein the stimulating drug(s) are delivered to targeted areas in the brain.

Claims

1. A method of treating diabetes in a patient so afflicted, comprising:

implanting one or more system control units in the patient, wherein one or more of the system control units are connected to and control one or more electrodes and/or drug delivery catheters that are implanted in the brain of the patient; and

delivering a stimulus configured to treat diabetes with one or more of the system control units via the one or more electrodes and/or drug delivery catheters to at least one of a ventromedial prefrontal cortex and a dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the system control unit receives power and/or data by RF transmission.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the system control unit is percutaneous and is connected to one or more electrodes by a percutaneous lead.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the system control unit receives power and/or data by direct electrical connection.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the stimulus comprises electrical stimulation delivered via the one or more electrodes.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the system control unit is connected to at least one pump and at least one infusion outlet, and wherein the stimulus comprises stimulation via one or more drugs delivered from the pump through the outlet.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more system control units comprises at least one microstimulator.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the stimulus is configured to prevent accommodation.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising customizing the stimulus to the patient.

10. A method of treating diabetes in a patient so afflicted, comprising:

implanting one or more system control units in the patient, wherein one or more of the system control units are connected to and control one or more electrodes and/or drug delivery catheters that are implanted in the brain of the patient; and

delivering a stimulus configured to treat diabetes with one or more of the system control units via the one or more electrodes and/or drug delivery catheters to at least an area of a right orbitofrontal cortex, an anterior insula, a dorsal putamen, and a basolateral amygdala (BLA).

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the stimulus comprises electrical stimulation delivered via the one or more electrodes.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the system control unit is connected to at least one pump and at least one infusion outlet, and wherein the stimulus comprises stimulation via one or more drugs delivered from the pump through the outlet.

13. A method of treating diabetes in a patient so afflicted, comprising:

implanting one or more system control units in the patient, wherein one or more of the system control units are connected to and control one or more electrodes and/or drug delivery catheters that are implanted in the brain of the patient; and

delivering a stimulus configured to treat diabetes with one or more of the system control units via the one or more electrodes and/or drug delivery catheters to at least one of a ventral tegmental area (VTA), a nucleus accumbens (NA), a hippocampus, a caudate nucleus, and a superior temporal.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the stimulus comprises electrical stimulation delivered via the one or more electrodes.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the system control unit is connected to at least one pump and at least one infusion outlet, and wherein the stimulus comprises stimulation via one or more drugs delivered from the pump through the outlet.

16. A method of modulating the basal metabolic rate in a diabetic patient, comprising:

implanting one or more system control units in the patient, wherein one or more of the system control units are connected to and control one or more electrodes and/or drug delivery catheters that are implanted in the brain of the patient; and

delivering a stimulus configured to modulate basal metabolic rate to at least one or more of a hypothalamus, a thyroid, a pituitary, and a locus coeruleus.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the stimulus to the hypothalamus is delivered to a paraventricular nucleus (PVN).

18. The method of claim 16, wherein stimulus comprises an excitatory low frequency electrical stimulation to increase the basal metabolic rate.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the stimulus comprises an inhibitory high frequency stimulus to decrease the basal metabolic rate.
