- receiving one or more input signals at a smart antenna array;
forming one or more uplink beam signals from the received one or more input signals;
receiving the one or more formed uplink beam signals at one or more receivers;
analyzing at least some of the one or more received uplink beam signals;
selecting at least one uplink beam signal from the one or more analyzed uplink beam signals; and
switching to the at least one selected uplink beam signal.

Abstract
A method of beam selection in a smart antenna system is provided. The method includes receiving a plurality of uplink beams by a plurality of receivers, each corresponding with one of the plurality of uplink beams. Each uplink beam includes signals transmitted by a mobile station. The method further includes analyzing each of the plurality of uplink beams and selecting an uplink beam from the plurality of uplink beams based at least in part on the analysis of the uplink beams. The method further includes switching to the selected beam in real time to allow the signals communicated in the selected beam to be communicated to a base station transceiver.

a smart antenna array, comprising one or more antenna elements, wherein each antenna element is configured to receive one or more input signals radiated from one or more mobile stations; a beam forming network, configured to form one or more uplink beam signals from the input one or more signals received at the antenna unit; a smart antenna apparatus, comprising; (a) one or more receivers, configured to receive the one or more uplink beam signals, (b) one or more beam analysis modules, configured to determine one or more uplink beam characteristics of the one or more uplink beam signals, and (c) one or more beam selection modules, configure to select at least one uplink beam signal from the one or more uplink beam signals, wherein the at least one uplink beam signal is selected based, at least in part, on the determined one or more uplink beam characteristics; and a base station transceiver, configured to receive the selected at least one uplink beam signal.
