1. A method of stimulating the nervous system, comprising:

  • implanting an electrode in proximity to a dorsal root ganglion without said electrode penetrating a vertebral body, wherein the electrode is capable of selectively stimulating the dorsal root ganglion and excluding other nervous tissue due to its size or shape; and

    activating the electrode to selectively stimulate the dorsal root ganglion.
