Abstract

A two-dimensional (2D) tag for reading with an optical reader. The tag has a plurality of dot positions, a locator component used to locate the tag by the reader, an orientation component used to sense an orientation of the reader relative to the tag, and a data area to be read by the reader. The tag is represented by a tag format structure that contains an entry for each of the plurality of dot positions. An entry in the tag format structure can specify whether the dot position is part of the locator component or whether the dot position is part of the data area.

Claims

1. A two-dimensional (2D) tag for reading with an optical reader, the tag having a plurality of dot positions and comprising:

a locator component used to locate the tag by the reader;

an orientation component used to sense an orientation of the reader relative to the tag; and

a data area to be read by the reader;

wherein the tag is represented by a tag format structure that contains an entry for each of the plurality of dot positions.

2. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein an entry in the tag format structure specifies whether the dot position is part of the locator component.

3. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein an entry in the tag format structure specifies whether the dot position is part of the data area.

4. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the tag format structure contains one entry for each dot position in the tag.

5. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the tag format structure has a tag width and a tag height parameter for the tag.

6. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the tag format structure has at least two bits in each entry of the tag format structure.

7. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the locator component is curved.

8. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 6, wherein the locator component is a circular annulus.

9. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the orientation component is located within the confines of the locator component.

10. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the data area is an arcuate data area.

11. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the data area comprises encoded data forming a generally checkered pattern.

12. The two-dimensional tag as claimed in claim 1, which is printed on a print medium.
