1. An apparatus for treating sleep apnea of a patient comprising:
- an apparatus configured for home use the apparatus including a pressure source configured to be coupled to the airway of a patient;
an information storage device storing information defining variable operating mode parameters including first information defining standard operating mode parameters defining a standard pressure profile and second information defining custom operating mode parameters defining a custom pressure profile that is different than the standard pressure profile and is customized according to the therapeutic needs of the patient;
an input device configured to receive a selection from the patient of an operating mode which is either a standard operating mode or a custom operating mode; and
a controller configured to read the first information and operate the sleep apnea treatment apparatus according to the standard operating mode parameters and to provide the standard pressure profile from the pressure source during the treatment cycle if the standard operating mode is selected or to read the second information and operate the sleep apnea treatment apparatus according to the custom operating mode parameters and to provide the custom pressure profile from the pressure source during the treatment cycle if the custom operating mode is selected.

Abstract
The present invention includes a method and apparatus for the optimized treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. The present invention includes a pressure source configured to provide positive airway pressure to a patient who is resting at home. The pressure source receives control signals from control electronics that define a pressure profile to be delivered to the patient. The control electronics select parameters to define the pressure profile based on factors such as a user selection, information received from a sensor, and/or a prescription.

15. An apparatus for treating sleep apnea of a patient comprising:
-
an apparatus including an air pressure source configured to couple to an airway of the patient and to deliver air pressure to the airway during a treatment cycle; a sensor configured to generate a signal in response to obstructive events during the treatment cycle; an information storage device storing operating parameters that define a pressure profile wherein the pressure profile includes an initial pressure profile and an incident pressure profile; a controller configured to; (1) read the operating parameters; (2) operate the pressure source to provide the initial pressure profile before an obstructive event; (3) operate the pressure source to provide the incident pressure profile during an obstructive event; (4) analyze the signal from the sensor; (5) generate a custom set of operating parameters defining a new pressure profile based upon analyzing the signal during the treatment cycle; and (6) store the custom set of operating parameters upon the information storage device. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
