1. A method of treating a subject having a condition, comprising:
- contacting an inflamed or infected problem area of a mucosal membrane of the subject having the condition with a nanocrystalline silver-containing compound to provide a localized anti-inflammatory effect, the silver-containing compound is characterized by sufficient atomic disorder so that the silver-containing compound, in contact with an alcohol or water-based electrolyte, releases atoms, ions, molecules, or clusters of the silver-containing compound on a sustainable basis and at a concentration sufficient to provide a localized anti-inflammatory effect or antimicrobial effect, wherein the condition is mucositis or stomatitis.
