Abstract

A switching system may include a gateway node connected with ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) and PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), and one or more extension nodes, and a serial bus such as IEEE 1394 bus. The gateway node may transform the data rate of an outside line into a data rate of the extension node, and vice versa, and secure a seamless communication channel. The gateway node may secures an isochronous channel, according to a request from the extension nodes or the outside line, and may executes switching such as transfer or reservation. A resource manager may hold a table for managing the gateway node and extension node.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

an extension node configured to receive and transmit voice signals; and

a gateway connected to the extension node via a serial bus and configured to;

receive a call for the extension node from a device via an outside network,

secure a bidirectional isochronous channel in response to receiving the call, and

send a channel number corresponding to the secured isochronous channel to the extension node via the serial bus to establish the call between the extension node and the device.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the call is associated with a telephone number for the extension node, and

wherein the gateway is further configured to:

convert the telephone number to a serial bus identifier associated with the extension node.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the gateway is further configured to:

transmit operational data to the extension node over the serial bus via an asynchronous channel.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the extension node is further configured to receive television signals, and

wherein the gateway is further configured to:

receive the television signals via the outside network, and

transfer the television signals to the extension node via an isochronous interface and an asynchronous interface.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the television signals include billing information.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the gateway includes a television interface and a telephone interface, the television interface connects to the serial bus and includes a first asynchronous interface and a first isochronous interface, and the telephone interface connects to the serial bus and includes a second asynchronous interface and a second isochronous interface.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the extension node includes a television interface for receiving television signals via the serial bus and a telephone interface for receiving telephone signals via the serial bus, the television interface including a first asynchronous interface and a first isochronous interface, and the telephone interface including a second asynchronous interface and a second isochronous interface.

8. An information terminal comprising:

a telephone interface configured to transmit and receive a telephone signal through a serial bus;

a television set interface configured to receive a television signal through the serial bus; and

a bus manager configured to control the serial bus, the bus manager including a first asynchronous interface and a first isochronous interface for the telephone signal and a second asynchronous interface and a second isochronous interface for the television signal.

9. A gateway comprising:

a telephone gateway configured to;

transfer telephone signals from a telephone network to at least one telephone terminal via a serial bus, and

transfer telephone signals from the serial bus to the telephone network;

a television gateway configured to;

receive a television signal from an external television line, and

cause the television signal to be transferred via the serial bus; and

a bus manager connected to the telephone gateway, the television gateway, and the serial bus, the bus manager including a first asynchronous interface and a first isochronous interface for transferring the telephone signal and a second asynchronous interface and a second isochronous interface for transferring the television signal.

10. A call-in signal processing method in a system that includes a gateway and a plurality of extension nodes, the gateway and the plurality of extension nodes being connected via a serial bus, the method comprising:

selecting, at the gateway, one of an automatic transfer by a number display, a global call-in, or a manual call-in on the basis of setup data;

calling, via the gateway, one or more extension nodes of the plurality of extension node by the selected one of an automatic transfer by a number display, a global call-in, or a manual call-in on the basis of setup data;

sending responses from the one or more extension nodes;

securing, via the gateway, one or more isochronous channels based on responses from the one or more extension nodes;

allowing the one or more extension nodes to start exchanging data via the one or more isochronous channels; and

sending, via the gateway, a call status of an extension node of the one or more extension nodes of which call status is changed to the plurality of extension nodes connected to the serial bus.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein each of the one or more extension nodes is associated with a unique physical identifier and selectively associated with a unique telephone number.

12. A call-out signal processing method in a system that includes a gateway and a plurality of extension nodes, the gateway and the plurality of extension nodes being connected via a serial bus, the method comprising:

receiving, at the gateway, a call from a first extension node of the plurality of extension nodes to a second extension node of the plurality of extension nodes;

confirming, at the gateway, a call status of the second extension node;

securing a first isochronous channel for transmission;

sending the call status to at least one other extension node of the plurality of extension nodes connected to the serial bus;

securing a second isochronous channel for reception; and

allowing the first extension node and the second extension node to start exchanging data via the first and second isochronous channels.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

releasing the first and second isochronous channels in response to detecting an on-hook state of the first extension node; and

sending a change in call status to the at least one other extension node.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein each of the plurality of extension nodes is associated with a unique physical identifier and selectively associated with a unique telephone number.
