Conduit including sensors for monitoring and maintenance of vegetation
First Claim
1. An apparatus for dispensing materials to grapevines, wherein the grapevines include a canopy, the apparatus comprising:
- an under vine canopy dripper including a conduit having a channel, wherein the under vine canopy dripper is positioned under the canopy of the grapevines;
an outlet coupled to the channel for conveying a material from the channel to the grapevines under the control of a central controller;
a plurality of photodetectors fixedly coupled to the conduit, wherein signals from the photodetectors are transmitted to a central control system and are used to control conveyance of the material to the grapevines wherein the photodetectors are responsive to sunlight passing through the canopy of the grapevines, wherein the photodetectors are spaced at regular intervals corresponding to regular intervals of placement of the grapevines.

Abstract
A system for automating the growing of crops, such as grapevines. Combinations of data from sensors local to a vineyard, and from optional remote stations and sensors, is combined with a control system to accurately control the dispensing of water and chemicals such as insecticides, disease prevention fungicides and fertilizers. The materials are dispensed through a multiple channel conduit which allows conflicting, or incompatible, types of materials to be transported through a common assembly. Sensors are attached to the conduit so that the placement of sensors can occur simultaneously with the laying of the conduit. This approach also ensures correct placement and spacing of the sensors with respect to each plant, or plant area, to be monitored and treated.
