Abstract

According to various aspects, exemplary embodiments are provided of contacts that may be compatible with surface mount technology. The contacts may be surface mountable for establishing an electrical pathway (e.g., electrical grounding contact, etc.) from at least one electrically-conductive surface on the substrate to another electrically-conductive surface (e.g., EMI shield, battery contact, etc.). In one exemplary embodiment, a contact generally includes a resilient dielectric core member. At least one outer electrically-conductive layer is electrocoated onto the resilient dielectric core member. A solderable electrically-conductive base member may be coupled to the resilient core member and/or the outer electrically-conductive layer. The base member may be in electrical contact with the outer electrically-conductive layer.

Claims

1. A contact compatible with surface mount technology and surface mountable for establishing electrical contact from at least one electrically-conductive surface on a substrate to another electrically-conductive surface, the contact comprising:

a resilient dielectric core member;

at least one outer electrically-conductive layer electrocoated onto the resilient dielectric core member; and

a solderable electrically-conductive base member coupled to at least one of the resilient core member and the outer electrically-conductive layer, and in electrical contact with the outer electrically-conductive layer,

wherein an upper portion of the contact includes a lip that compresses inwardly or outwardly when a load is applied with a generally downward force component against the lip,

wherein the lip defines an opening into the upper portion, and the contact further comprises a cavity having sidewalls extending generally downwardly from the opening at least partially through the contact.

2. The contact of claim 1, wherein the resilient dielectric core member is insert molded to the base member.

3. The contact of claim 1, wherein the base member comprises a metal washer.

4. The contact of claim 1, wherein:

the resilient dielectric core member comprises at least one of silicone rubber and neoprene foam;

the electrically-conductive outer layer comprises polyurethane loaded with electrically-conductive particles; and

the base member comprises tin-plated cold rolled steel.

5. The contact of claim 1, wherein the contact is formed from materials having the ability to withstand solder reflow temperatures up to about four hundred fifty degrees Fahrenheit.

6. A printed circuit board having a ground trace to which is bonded the base member of the contact of claim 1.

7. An electrical device including the printed circuit board of claim 6.

8. The contact of claim 1, wherein the contact is in electrical contact with a least one electrically-conductive surface of an electromagnetic interference shield or a battery.

9. The contact of claim 1, wherein the upper portion of the contact has a generally ogival shape.

10. A contact for establishing electrical contact from at least one electrically-conductive surface to another electrically-conductive surface, the contact comprising:

a resilient dielectric core member;

at least one outer electrically-conductive layer electrocoated onto the resilient dielectric core member;

a lower portion; and

an upper portion configured to compress generally towards the lower portion,

wherein the upper portion of the contact includes a lip that compresses inwardly or outwardly, when a compressive load is applied against the lip,

wherein the upper portion includes a tap surface portion defining an opening into the upper portion, and the contact further comprises a cavity having sidewalls extending from the opening at least partially through the contact.

11. The contact of claim 10, wherein the contact is formed from materials having the ability to withstand solder reflow temperatures up to about four hundred fifty degrees Fahrenheit.

12. The contact of claim 10, wherein the upper portion has a generally ogival shape.

13. The contact of claim 10, wherein the contact is configured to be compressed generally between first and second surfaces with sufficient contact pressure effective for establishing an electrically-conductive pathway between the first and second surfaces.

14. The contact of claim 10, wherein the contact is configured to conform at least partially to a gap defined between first and second surfaces, when the contact is sandwiched under pressure between the first and second surfaces with the first surface compressively engaging the contact'"'"'s upper portion in a direction generally towards the second surface.

15. The contact of claim 10, further comprising an electrically-conductive base in electrical contact with the at least one outer electrically-conductive layer.

16. The contact of claim 10, wherein the sidewalls of the cavity are not electrocoated such that the portion of the resilient dielectric core member defining the sidewalls remains exposed.

17. The contact of claim 10, wherein:

the resilient dielectric core member comprises at least one of silicone rubber and neoprene foam; and

the electrically-conductive outer layer comprises polyurethane loaded with electrically-conductive particles.

18. A contact for establishing electrical contact from at least one electrically-conductive surface to another electrically-conductive surface, the contact comprising:

a resilient dielectric core member;

at least one outer electrically-conductive layer electrocoated onto the resilient dielectric core member;

a lower portion;

an upper portion configured to compress generally towards the lower portion, the upper portion including a top surface portion defining an opening into the upper portion,

a cavity having sidewalls extending from the opening at least partially through the contact; and

tapered surface portions extending generally between the top surface portion and the cavity, the tapered surface portions being electrocoated with at least one outer electrically-conductive layer.

19. The contact of claim 18, wherein the upper portion of the contact includes a lip that compresses inwardly or outwardly, when a compressive load is applied against the lip.

20. A contact for establishing electrical contact from at least one electrically-conductive surface to another electrically-conductive surface, the contact comprising:

a resilient dielectric core member;

at least one outer electrically-conductive layer electrocoated onto the resilient dielectric core member;

an electrically-conductive base in electrical contact with the at least one outer electrically-conductive layer,

a lower portion;

an upper portion configured to compress generally towards the lower portion;

a lip defining an opening into the upper portion;

a cavity having sidewalls extending generally downwardly from the opening at least partially through the contact; and

tapered surface portions extending generally between the lip and the cavity, the tapered surface portions being electrocoated with at least one outer electrically-conductive layer.

21. The contact of claim 20, wherein the upper portion has a generally ogival shape, and wherein the opening and the cavity are generally circular.

22. The contact of claim 20, wherein the lip includes at least one outer electrically-conductive layer electrocoated thereon, and wherein the sidewalls of the cavity are not electrocoated such that the portion of the resilient dielectric core member defining the sidewalls remains exposed.
