1. A method of identifying a source of a marking fluid applied to a person or an object, the method comprising:

  • applying a marking fluid comprising one or more security markers to a person or an object,illuminating the applied marking fluid to excite the one or more security markers;

    detecting photoluminescent emission from the one or more security markers in response to the excitation;

    generating a photoluminescent signature based on a plurality of aspects of the detected photoluminescent emission, wherein the plurality ot aspects of the detected photoluminescent emission compnse a rate of change of emission versus time and a rate of change of emission versus wavelength;

    comparing the generated photoluminescent signature with one or more pre-defined photoluminescent signatures associated with the source of the marking fluid; and

    identifying the source of the marking fluid based on a match between the generated photoluminescent signature and at least one of the one or more pre-defined photoluminescent signatures.
