1. A method of managing manufacturing logistics of end products to enable customers to configure orders from components, comprising:

  • maintaining an inventory of components, which components, termed “

    building blocks”

    , are built to stock, each said component having a cost, a base-stock level having been established for each of said components, the cost of at least one of said components of an end product being higher than the cost of at least one other component of said end product;

    selecting by a customer of components for said end product, said end product being assembled for the customer from said inventory of said selected components;

    replenishing said respective selected components in accordance with said respective base-stock levels so as to reduce a total cost of inventory of said selected components by weighting a reduction in inventory toward said at least one higher priced component, there being a network of inventory queues whose configuration is determined by a bill of materials structure of said end product,wherein said base-stock level R for the ith said component in a period t is defined as
    Ri(t);

    i(t)+ki(t

    i(t),where ki(t) is a desired safety factor, while μ

    i(t) and σ

    i(t) can be derived (via queuing analysis) as
    μ

    i(t)=Σ

    s=tt+liin

    1
    Ε

    [Di(s)], and
    σ

    i2(t)=Σ

    s=tt+liin31 1Var[Di(s)], respectively,where liin;

    [Liin] is expected in-bound leadtime; and

    wherein Ri(t) is translated into “

    days of supply”

    (DOS), where the μ

    i(t) part of Ri(t) translates into periods of demand and the ki(t)σ

    i(t) part of Ri(t) is turned into
    k(t)o1()periods of demand so that Ri(t) is expressed in terms of periods of DOS as
    DOSi(t)=liin[1+ki(t

    i(t)/μ

    i(t)].
