Abstract

A nonwoven acoustic insulating material which also provides repellency to water and low surface tension fluids. Also disclosed is a method for attenuating transmitted sound and repelling fluids which includes providing a nonwoven acoustic insulating material, the nonwoven acoustic insulating material including at least one nonwoven web having a low surface tension fluids repellency treatment, and interposing the treated nonwoven acoustic insulating material between a sound generation area and a sound receiving area.

Claims

1. A nonwoven acoustic insulating material having liquid repellency properties, the acoustic insulating material comprising a) a sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer comprising a nonwoven web having a topical treatment of a fluorochemical that imparts water and low-surface-tension fluid repellency to the Sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer, and b) a sound receiving area-facing nonwoven web layer comprising a high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web layer;

and said acoustic insulating material exhibits a sound absorption coefficient of greater than about 0.8 at a sound frequency of higher than 2500 Hz.

2. The nonwoven acoustic insulating material according to claim 1, wherein said acoustic insulating material exhibits a sound absorption coefficient of greater than about 0.85 for a sound frequency of about 2500 Hz and greater.

A fluid repellent nonwoven acoustic insulating material comprising a sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer and a sound receiving area-facing layer, wherein the sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer comprises a low surface tension fluids repellency treatment and wherein the low surface tension fluids repellency treatment comprises a topical fluorochemical treatment.

4. The fluid repellent nonwoven acoustic insulating material of claim 3, wherein the sound receiving area-facing layer is selected from the group consisting of nonwoven layers, shoddy layers, fiberglass layers, mineral fiber layers and foam layers.

5. The fluid repellent nonwoven acoustic insulating material of claim 3, wherein the sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer comprises a meltblown web layer and wherein the Sound receiving area-facing layer comprises a high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web layer.

The fluid repellent nonwoven acoustic insulating material of claim 3, wherein the sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer comprises a spunbond-meltblown-spunbond laminate web layer and wherein the sound receiving area-facing layer comprises a high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web layer.

The fluid repellent nonwoven acoustic insulating material of claim 6, wherein the spunbond-meltbiown-spunbond laminate web has a sound generation area-facing spunbond layer and a spunbond layer adjacent the high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web and wherein the low surface tension fluids repellency treatment is present in a higher concentration in the sound generation area-facing spunbond layer of the spunbond-meitbiown-spunbond laminate web than in the spunbond layer adjacent the high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web layer.

8. A method for attenuating transmitted sound and repelling fluids, the method comprising

providing a nonwoven acoustic insulating material comprising a sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer and a sound receiving area-facing layer, wherein the sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer comprises a low surface tension fluids repellency treatment, wherein the low surface tension fluids repellency treatment comprises a topical fluorochemical treatment, and

interposing the nonwoven acoustic insulating material between a Sound generation area and a sound receiving area.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer is selected from the group consisting of meltblown webs, spunbond webs and laminates thereof.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer comprises a laminate comprising at least one spunbond web and at least one meltblown web.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein sound generation area-facing nonwoven web layer comprises a spunbond-meltblown-spunbond laminate web.

The method of claim 11, wherein the spunbond-meltblown-spunbond laminate web has a sound generation area-facing spunbond layer and a sound receiving-area facing spunbond layer and wherein the low surface tension fluids repellency treatment is present in a higher concentration in the sound generation area-facing spunbond layer of the spunbond-meltblown-spunbond laminate web than in the sound receiving-area facing spunbond layer.

13. The method of claim 8, wherein the sound receiving area-facing layer is selected from the group consisting of nonwoven layers, shoddy layers, fiberglass layers, and mineral fiber layers.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the sound receiving area-facing layer is a high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web layer.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the sound receiving area-facing layer comprises a high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web layer laminated to the sound generation area facing layer spunbond-meltblown-spunbond laminate web.

The method of claim 15, wherein the spunbond-meltblown-spunbond laminate web has a sound generation area-facing spunbond layer and a spunbond layer adjacent the high-loft mutticomponent fiber nonwoven web and wherein the low surface tension fluids repellency treatment is present in a higher concentration in the sound generation area-facing spunbond layer of the spunbond-meltblown-spunbond laminate web than in the spunbond layer adjacent the high-loft multicomponent fiber nonwoven web layer.
