1. A method of wireless transmission of packet data from a remote station in a communication network having a base station, the method comprising steps of:

  • selecting an access preamble from a set of predefined preambles;

    spread-spectrum transmitting an access burst segment consisting of the selected preamble at a first discrete power level followed by a pilot, without any data of a message;

    during transmitting of the pilot, listening for an acknowledgement signal from the base station;

    if NO acknowledgement corresponding to the access preamble is detected while listening, spread-spectrum transmitting an access burst segment consisting of an access preamble from the set of predefined preambles at a second discrete power level higher than the first discrete power level followed by a pilot, without any data of a message;

    upon detecting an acknowledgement corresponding to a transmitted access preamble, ceasing access burst segment transmission; and

    beginning transmission of packet data of a message, for reception by the base station, following cessation of access burst segment transmission.
