Abstract

A display apparatus includes a color image projection unit and a screen. The color image projection unit includes a converter which receives image signals of three primary colors, and converts the received image signals of three primary colors into image signals of four or more primary colors, and a color image projector which includes a plurality of image projection devices having respective primary colors, and which receives the image signals of four or more primary colors, and projects the received image signals of four or more primary colors onto the screen. The color image projector is capable of physically adjusting positions of the image signals of four or more primary colors, which are projected onto the screen such that the positions of the image signals are coincident with each other.

Claims

1. A color converting method to convert input three color values into color image signals of at least four primary colors of the color image display unit, comprising the steps of:

determining which of a plurality of color conversion areas the input three color values belong to in a three-dimensional color space; and

converting the input three color values into the color image signals of the respective primary colors based on color conversion parameters corresponding to the color conversion area determined by the determining step,

wherein the color conversion parameters in at least one of the color conversion areas obtain a color image signal that is larger than 0 for at least four primary colors.

2. The color converting method according to claim 1, wherein the decided color conversion area is a hexahedron constructed by colors corresponding to three color image signals that take a value from 0 to a maximum value and other color image signals that take one of 0 and the maximum value.

3. The color converting method according to claim 1, wherein the decided color conversion area is a pyramid constructed by predetermined input tristimulus values within a reproducible color space and vertexes that form a surface of the reproducible color space.

The color converting method according to claim 1, wherein the method further comprises storing profile data as the color conversion parameters, obtaining an area for prescribing a conversion profile of the input tristimulus values by using the profile data, outputting a coefficient of each primary color signal according to the area, and converting the coefficient of each primary color signal and the profile data into an input signal.

The color converting method according to claim 4, wherein the storing profile data step includes the step of storing X, Y and Z coordinate data at a time of a maximum light emission of each primary color and gradation characteristic data for providing a relationship between an input signal value and light emission luminance as the profile data.

The color converting method according to claim 4, wherein the profile data is prepared by displaying an image of a sample signal value for each primary color in the color image display unit and by measuring X, Y and Z values of the images in synchronism with the display of the image of the sample signal value for each primary color.

The color converting method according to claim 1, wherein the deciding step comprises dividing a reproducible color space in the color image display unit into a plurality of divided areas based on a combination of three color image signals that take a value from 0 to a maximum value and other color image signals that take either 0 or a maximum value, determining a divided area to which the input tristimulus values belong among the plurality of divided areas, and outputting a coefficient of each primary color signal in the determined divided area.

8. The color converting method according to claim 7, wherein each of the plurality of divided areas is a hexahedron.

9. The color converting method according to claim 7, wherein when the input tristimulus values do not belong to any one of the plurality of divided areas, setting a predetermined position within the reproducible color space as a target color, mapping the input tristimulus values into a cross point between a line connecting between the target color and the input tristimulus values and the surface of the reproducible color space, and outputting a coefficient of each primary color signal.

The color converting method according to claim 4, wherein the step of converting the three input color values comprises obtaining a linear signal by multiplying a maximum gradation value of each primary color to a corresponding coefficient, outputting the obtained linear signal, and correcting a gradation of each linear signal by using gradation characteristic data.

11. The color converting method according to claim 1, wherein:

the step of deciding comprises deciding a divided area for converting the input tristimulus values from a reproducible color space that has been divided into a plurality of tetrahedral areas in advance, and calculating a linear signal based on the input tristimulus values and the profile data according to the decided divided area, and

the step of converting the input three color values comprises carrying out a predetermined gradation correction and calculating an input signal to the color image display unit.

12. The color converting method according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the color conversion areas is a polyhedron which includes a tristimulus value that is obtained by mixing at least four primary colors, as a vertex.

13. The color converting method according to claim 12, wherein at least one of the color conversion areas is one of a hexahedron and a pyramid which includes a tristimulus value that is obtained by mixing at least four primary colors, as a vertex.

14. A look-up table making method, wherein the lookup-table stores color image signals of at least four primary colors of the color image display unit corresponding to input three color values as an address, comprising the steps of:

determining which of a plurality of color conversion areas the input three color values belong in a three-dimensional color space; and

converting the input three color values into the color image signals of the respective primary colors based on color conversion parameters corresponding to the color conversion area determined by the area determining step,

wherein the color conversion parameter in at least one of the color conversion areas obtain a color image signal that is larger than 0 for at least four primary colors.
