Abstract

A system is provided for monitoring glucose in a host, including a continuous glucose sensor that produces a data stream indicative of a host'"'"'s glucose concentration and an integrated receiver that receives the data stream from the continuous glucose sensor and calibrates the data stream using a single point glucose monitor that is integral with the integrated receiver. The integrated receiver obtains a glucose value from the single point glucose monitor, calibrates the sensor data stream received from the continuous glucose sensor, and displays one or both of the single point glucose measurement values and the calibrated continuous glucose sensor values on the user interface.

Claims

1. A system for monitoring glucose concentration in a biological sample of a host, the system comprising:

a continuous glucose sensor that produces a data stream indicative of a host'"'"'s glucose concentration, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises a sensing region and a sensing membrane located over the sensing region;

an integrated receiver that receives the data stream from the continuous glucose sensor, wherein the integrated receiver comprises a housing, and wherein the housing comprises;

a processor module comprising programming to process the data stream received from glucose sensor;

a single point glucose monitor adapted to receive a biological sample from the host and measure the concentration of glucose in the sample, wherein electronics associated with the single point monitor are non-releasably located on the housing, wherein the single point glucose monitor further comprises a sensing region and a sensing membrane located over the sensing region; and

wherein the processor module further comprises programming to calibrate the data stream using the glucose concentration measured by the single point glucose monitor.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises an electrochemical cell that measures the glucose concentration.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises an electrochemical cell that measures a concentration of glucose in the sample.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the integrated receiver further comprises a user interface for displaying glucose concentration data from the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

The system of claim 1, wherein the sensing membrane of each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise an enzyme domain, and wherein the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous sensor and the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point monitor are substantially similar.

The system of claim 1, wherein the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor use similar measurement technologies, and wherein the similar measurement technologies used for both the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor comprise the same technology selected from the group consisting of enzymatic, chemical, physical, electrochemical, spectrophotometric, polarimetric, calorimetric, and/or radiometric technologies.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

9. The system of claim 7, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensing membrane comprises an enzyme.

16. A method for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor within an integrated receiver housing comprising a processor module comprising programming to process a data stream received from a continuous glucose sensor and a single point glucose monitor adapted to receive a biological sample from the host and measure the concentration of glucose in the sample, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, the method comprising:

continually receiving a data stream in the integrated receiver housing from a continuous glucose sensor;

measuring a glucose concentration of a biological sample using a single point glucose monitor, wherein electronics associated with the single point glucose monitor are non-releasably located on the integrated receiver housing; and

calibrating the data stream within the integrated receiver using the glucose concentration measured by the single point glucose monitor.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:

displaying the glucose concentration measured by the single point glucose monitor.

18. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:

displaying a calibrated data stream.

The method of claim 16, wherein the sensing membrane of each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise an enzyme domain, and wherein the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous sensor and the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point monitor are substantially similar.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor use similar measurement technologies, and wherein the similar measurement technologies used for both the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor comprise the same technology selected from the group consisting of enzymatic, chemical, physical, electrochemical, spectrophotometric, polarimetric, calorimetric, and/or radiometric technologies.

21. The method of claim 16, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

25. The method of claim 16, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials and/or layers that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials and/or layers that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials and/or layers that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

28. The method of claim 16, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

29. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor data, the system comprising:

an integrated receiver comprising an integrated receiver housing, wherein the integrated receiver housing comprises;

a single point glucose monitor integral with the housing and adapted to measure a glucose concentration in a biological sample;

a receiver for receiving a data stream from a continuous glucose sensor; and

a processor module comprising programming to calibrate the data stream from a continuous glucose sensor using the glucose concentration measured from the single point glucose monitor, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises a sensor port that houses the sensing region adapted for measuring a glucose concentration in the biological sample, further comprising a disposable capillary tube, wherein the disposable capillary tube is configured to create a capillary action capable of drawing a liquid biological sample from a first end of the tube to a second end of the tube, wherein the disposable capillary tube comprises the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor, and wherein the sensing membrane comprises a resistance domain and an enzyme domain.

30. The system of claim 29, further comprising the continuous glucose sensor, wherein the continuous glucose sensor produces a data stream indicative of a host'"'"'s glucose concentration, and wherein the continuous glucose sensor further comprises an electrochemical cell that measures the glucose concentration.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises:

an electrochemical cell that measures the glucose concentration in the biological sample.

32. The system of claim 30, further comprising a user interface adapted to display glucose data from at least one of the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

33. The system of claim 30, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises at least two electrodes, wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the integrated receiver.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein the integrated receiver comprises a removable cartridge, and wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the removable cartridge.

35. The system of claim 29, wherein the disposable capillary tube comprises a filter configured to permit passage of glucose, but to filter or block passage of an undesired species or a contaminating species in the biological sample.

36. The system of claim 35, wherein the disposable capillary tube further comprises a vent configured to allow displaced air within the capillary tube to escape therefrom.

37. The system of claim 29, wherein the sensor port comprises a cover adapted for protecting the sensing region.

38. The system of claim 29, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are detachably connected to each other.

39. The system of claim 38, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver each comprise at least one contact adapted for operable connection when detachably connected to each other.

40. The system of claim 38, wherein the processor module is located within the receiver.

41. The system of claim 38, further comprising a processor module located within the single point glucose monitor, wherein the processor module is adapted for communication between the single point glucose monitor and the receiver when the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are operably connected.

42. The system of claim 29, wherein the sensing membrane of each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise an enzyme domain, and wherein the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous sensor and the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point monitor are substantially similar.

43. The system of claim 29, wherein the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor use similar measurement technologies, and wherein the similar measurement technologies used for both the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor comprise the same technology selected from the group consisting of enzymatic, chemical, physical, electrochemical, spectrophotometric, polarimetric, calorimetric, and/or radiometric technologies.

44. The system of claim 29, wherein the disposable capillary tube is configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

45. The system of claim 29, wherein the sensing membrane comprises an enzyme.

46. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor data, the system comprising:

an integrated receiver comprising an integrated receiver housing, wherein the integrated receiver housing comprises;

a single point glucose monitor integral with the housing and adapted to measure a glucose concentration in a biological sample;

a receiver for receiving a data stream from a continuous glucose sensor;

a processor module comprising programming to calibrate the data stream from a continuous glucose sensor using the glucose concentration measured from the single point glucose monitor, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

47. The system of claim 46, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

48. The system of claim 46, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

49. The system of claim 48, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

50. The system of claim 46, further comprising a continuous glucose sensor, wherein the continuous glucose sensor produces a data stream indicative of a glucose concentration in a host, and wherein the continuous glucose sensor further comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration.

51. The system of claim 50, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration in the biological sample.

52. The system of claim 50, further comprising a user interface configured to display glucose data from at least one of the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

53. The system of claim 46, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises at least two electrodes, wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the integrated receiver.

54. The system of claim 46, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are configured to detachably connect to each other.

55. The system of claim 54, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver each comprise at least one contact adapted for operable connection when detachably connected to each other.

56. The system of claim 55, wherein the processor module is located within the receiver.

57. The system of claim 55, further comprising a processor module located within the single point glucose monitor, wherein the processor module is adapted for communication between the single point glucose monitor and the receiver when the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are operably connected.

58. The system of claim 46, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

59. The system of claim 58, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

60. The system of claim 59, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

61. The system of claim 46, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

62. The system of claim 46, wherein the sensing membrane comprises an enzyme.

63. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor data, the system comprising:

an integrated receiver comprising an integrated receiver housing, wherein the integrated receiver housing comprises;

a single point glucose monitor integral with the housing and adapted to measure a glucose concentration in a biological sample;

a receiver for receiving a data stream from a continuous glucose sensor;

a processor module comprising programming to calibrate the data stream from a continuous glucose sensor using the glucose concentration measured from the single point glucose monitor, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

64. The system of claim 63, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

65. The system of claim 64, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

66. The system of claim 63, further comprising a continuous glucose sensor, wherein the continuous glucose sensor produces a data stream indicative of a glucose concentration in a host, and wherein the continuous glucose sensor further comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration.

67. The system of claim 63, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration in the biological sample.

68. The system of claim 63, further comprising a user interface configured to display glucose data from at least one of the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

69. The system of claim 63, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises at least two electrodes, wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the integrated receiver.

70. The system of claim 63, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are configured to detachably connect to each other.

71. The system of claim 70, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver each comprise at least one contact adapted for operable connection when detachably connected to each other.

72. The system of claim 70, wherein the processor module is located within the receiver.

73. The system of claim 70, further comprising a processor module located within the single point glucose monitor, wherein the processor module is adapted for communication between the single point glucose monitor and the receiver when the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are operably connected.

74. The system of claim 63, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

75. The system of claim 74, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

76. The system of claim 74, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

77. The system of claim 76, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

78. The system of claim 63, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

79. The system of claim 63, wherein the single point glucose monitor is integrally formed within the housing.

80. The system of claim 63, wherein the sensing membrane comprises an enzyme.

81. A system for monitoring glucose concentration in a biological sample of a host, the system comprising:

a continuous glucose sensor that produces a data stream indicative of a host'"'"'s glucose concentration, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises a sensing region and a sensing membrane located over the sensing region;

an integrated receiver that receives the data stream from the continuous glucose sensor, wherein the integrated receiver comprises a housing, and wherein the housing comprises;

a processor module comprising programming to process the data stream received from glucose sensor; and

a single point glucose monitor adapted to receive a biological sample from the host and measure the concentration of glucose in the sample, wherein the single point monitor is non-releasably located on the housing, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises a sensing region and a sensing membrane located over the sensing region;

wherein the processor module further comprises programming to calibrate the data stream using the glucose concentration measured by the single point glucose monitor.

82. The system of claim 81, wherein the continuous glucose sensor comprises an electrochemical cell that measures the glucose concentration.

83. The system of claim 82, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises an electrochemical cell that measures a concentration of glucose in the sample.

84. The system of claim 81, wherein the integrated receiver further comprises a user interface for displaying glucose concentration data from the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

85. The system of claim 81, wherein the sensing membrane of each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise an enzyme domain, and wherein the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous sensor and the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point monitor are substantially similar.

86. The system of claim 81, wherein the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor use similar measurement technologies, and wherein the similar measurement technologies used for both the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor comprise the same technology selected from the group consisting of enzymatic, chemical, physical, electrochemical, spectrophotometric, polarimetric, calorimetric, and/or radiometric technologies.

87. The system of claim 81, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

88. The system of claim 87, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

89. The system of claim 87, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

90. The system of claim 89, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

91. The system of claim 81, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials and/or layers that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

92. The system of claim 91, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials and/or layers that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

93. The system of claim 92, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials and/or layers that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

94. The system of claim 81, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

95. A method for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor within an integrated receiver housing comprising a processor module comprising programming to process a data stream received from a continuous glucose sensor and a single point glucose monitor adapted to receive a biological sample from the host and measure the concentration of glucose in the sample, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, the method comprising:

continually receiving a data stream in the integrated receiver housing from a continuous glucose sensor;

measuring a glucose concentration of a biological sample using a single point glucose monitor non-releasably located on the integrated receiver housing; and

calibrating the data stream within the integrated receiver using the glucose concentration measured by the single point glucose monitor.

96. The method of claim 95, further comprising the step of:

displaying the glucose concentration measured by the single point glucose monitor.

97. The method of claim 95, further comprising the step of:

displaying a calibrated data stream.

98. The method of claim 95, wherein the sensing membrane of each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise an enzyme domain, and wherein the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous sensor and the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point monitor are substantially similar.

99. The method of claim 95, wherein the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor use similar measurement technologies, and wherein the similar measurement technologies used for both the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor comprise the same technology selected from the group consisting of enzymatic, chemical, physical, electrochemical, spectrophotometric, polarimetric, calorimetric, and/or radiometric technologies.

100. The method of claim 95, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

101. The method of claim 100, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

102. The method of claim 100, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

103. The method of claim 102, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

104. The method of claim 95, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials and/or layers that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

105. The method of claim 104, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials and/or layers that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

106. The method of claim 105, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials and/or layers that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

107. The method of claim 95, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

108. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor data, the system comprising:

an integrated receiver comprising an integrated receiver housing, wherein the integrated receiver housing comprises;

a single point glucose monitor integrally formed within the housing and adapted to measure a glucose concentration in a biological sample;

a receiver for receiving a data stream from a continuous glucose sensor;

a processor module comprising programming to calibrate the data stream from a continuous glucose sensor using the glucose concentration measured from the single point glucose monitor, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises a sensor port that houses the sensing region adapted for measuring a glucose concentration in the biological sample, further comprising a disposable capillary tube, wherein the disposable capillary tube is configured to create a capillary action capable of drawing a liquid biological sample from a first end of the tube to a second end of the tube, wherein the disposable capillary tube comprises the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor, and wherein the sensing membrane comprises a resistance domain and an enzyme domain.

The system of claim 108, further comprising the continuous glucose sensor, wherein the continuous glucose sensor produces a data stream indicative of a host'"'"'s glucose concentration, and wherein the continuous glucose sensor further comprises an electrochemical cell that measures the glucose concentration.

110. The system of claim 109, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises:

an electrochemical cell that measures the glucose concentration in the biological sample.

111. The system of claim 109, further comprising a user interface adapted to display glucose data from at least one of the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

112. The system of claim 109, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises at least two electrodes, wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the integrated receiver.

113. The system of claim 112, wherein the integrated receiver comprises a removable cartridge, and wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the removable cartridge.

114. The system of claim 108, wherein the disposable capillary tube comprises a filter configured to permit passage of glucose, but to filter or block passage of an undesired species or a contaminating species in the biological sample.

115. The system of claim 114, wherein the disposable capillary tube further comprises a vent configured to allow displaced air within the capillary tube to escape therefrom.

116. The system of claim 108, wherein the sensor port comprises a cover adapted for protecting the sensing region.

117. The system of claim 108, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are detachably connected to each other.

118. The system of claim 117, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver each comprise at least one contact adapted for operable connection when detachably connected to each other.

119. The system of claim 117, wherein the processor module is located within the receiver.

The system of claim 117, further comprising a processor module located within the single point glucose monitor, wherein the processor module is adapted for communication between the single point glucose monitor and the receiver when the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are operably connected.

The system of claim 108, wherein the sensing membrane of each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise an enzyme domain, and wherein the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous sensor and the enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point monitor are substantially similar.

The system of claim 108, wherein the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor use similar measurement technologies, and wherein the similar measurement technologies used for both the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor comprise the same technology selected from the group consisting of enzymatic, chemical, physical, electrochemical, spectrophotometric, polarimetric, calorimetric, and/or radiometric technologies.

123. The system of claim 108, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

124. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor data, the system comprising:

an integrated receiver comprising an integrated receiver housing, wherein the integrated receiver housing comprises;

a single point glucose monitor integrally formed within the housing and adapted to measure a glucose concentration in a biological sample;

a receiver for receiving a data stream from a continuous glucose sensor;

a processor module comprising programming to calibrate the data stream from a continuous glucose sensor using the glucose concentration measured from the single point glucose monitor, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

125. The system of claim 124, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

126. The system of claim 124, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

127. The system of claim 126, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

The system of claim 124, further comprising a continuous glucose sensor, wherein the continuous glucose sensor produces a data stream indicative of a glucose concentration in a host, and wherein the continuous glucose sensor further comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration.

129. The system of claim 128, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration in the biological sample.

130. The system of claim 128, further comprising a user interface configured to display glucose data from at least one of the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

131. The system of claim 124, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises at least two electrodes, wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the integrated receiver.

132. The system of claim 124, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are configured to detachably connect to each other.

133. The system of claim 132, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver each comprise at least one contact adapted for operable connection when detachably connected to each other.

134. The system of claim 133, wherein the processor module is located within the receiver.

The system of claim 133, further comprising a processor module located within the single point glucose monitor, wherein the processor module is adapted for communication between the single point glucose monitor and the receiver when the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are operably connected.

136. The system of claim 124, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials and/or layers that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

137. The system of claim 136, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials and/or layers that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

138. The system of claim 137, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials and/or layers that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

139. The system of claim 124, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.

140. A system for calibrating a continuous glucose sensor data, the system comprising:

an integrated receiver comprising an integrated receiver housing, wherein the integrated receiver housing comprises;

a single point glucose monitor integrally formed within the housing and adapted to measure a glucose concentration in a biological sample;

a receiver for receiving a data stream from a continuous glucose sensor;

a processor module comprising programming to calibrate the data stream from a continuous glucose sensor using the glucose concentration measured from the single point glucose monitor, wherein each of the continuous sensor and the single point monitor comprise a sensing region comprising a sensing membrane, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more materials and/or layers that are the same as two or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

141. The system of claim 140, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more materials and/or layers that are the same as three or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

142. The system of claim 141, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises four or more materials and/or layers that are the same as four or more materials of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

The system of claim 140, further comprising a continuous glucose sensor, wherein the continuous glucose sensor produces a data stream indicative of a glucose concentration in a host, and wherein the continuous glucose sensor further comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration.

144. The system of claim 140, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises an electrochemical cell configured to measure the glucose concentration in the biological sample.

145. The system of claim 140, further comprising a user interface configured to display glucose data from at least one of the continuous glucose sensor and the single point glucose monitor.

146. The system of claim 140, wherein the single point glucose monitor comprises at least two electrodes, wherein the sensing region of the single point glucose monitor is located within the integrated receiver.

147. The system of claim 140, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are configured to detachably connect to each other.

148. The system of claim 147, wherein the single point glucose monitor and the receiver each comprise at least one contact adapted for operable connection when detachably connected to each other.

149. The system of claim 147, wherein the processor module is located within the receiver.

The system of claim 147, further comprising a processor module located within the single point glucose monitor, wherein the processor module is adapted for communication between the single point glucose monitor and the receiver when the single point glucose monitor and the receiver are operably connected.

151. The system of claim 140, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises one or more domains and/or layers that are the same as one or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

152. The system of claim 151, wherein an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor and an enzyme domain of the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprise same materials.

153. The system of claim 151, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises two or more domains and/or layers that are the same as two or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane of the continuous glucose sensor.

154. The system of claim 153, wherein the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor comprises three or more domains and/or layers that are the same as three or more domains and/or layers of the sensing membrane continuous glucose sensor.

155. The system of claim 140, wherein the sensing region and/or the sensing membrane of the single point glucose monitor is located on a test strip configured to be releasably received by the single point glucose monitor.
