1. A system for detecting states of indicators, comprising:

  • a detector containing a plurality of light detecting elements that are arranged relative to the indicators so that light from any of the indicators causes contributions to component signals respectively output from at least two of the light detecting elements wherein for each of the indicators, the light from the indicator causes contributions to the component signals corresponding to a signal vector characteristic of the indicator; and

an analysis system connected to analyze the component signals to identify the state of one or more of the indicators, wherein the analysis system identifies a set of signal vectors that are respectively characteristic of the indicators and in combination are equivalent to a measured signal vector.
