1. A method for making a high quality vanadium oxide film suitable for use as a counter electrode in an electrochromic device, comprising the steps of:

  • (a) providing a substantially transparent and conductive substrate;

    (b) attaching an additional conductive material to a portion of the substantially transparent and conductive substrate, such that the additional conductive material is electrically coupled to the substantially transparent and conductive substrate; and

    (c) producing the counter electrode for use in the electrochromic device by depositing a thin film of vanadium oxide onto the substantially transparent and conductive substrate using cyclic voltammetry, wherein the step of using cyclic voltammetry comprises the step of applying the cyclic voltammetry potential to the additional conductive material to ensure a substantially uniform vanadium oxide film is deposited on the substantially transparent and conductive substrate.
