First Claim
1. An alert system for a vehicle, said alert system comprising:
- a lane departure warning system operable to detect lane markers on a road being traveled by a vehicle equipped with said alert system;
a side object detection system operable to detect the presence of another vehicle in a side lane adjacent to the lane being traveled by the equipped vehicle;
wherein when said lane departure warning system detects the equipped vehicle making a lane change into a side lane and when said side object detection system detects a vehicle in that side lane, said alert system generates an alert to the driver of the equipped vehicle; and
a forward facing camera having a forward field of view in the forward direction of travel of the equipped vehicle, said forward facing camera capturing image data within the forward field of view, and wherein said alert system processes said captured image data and detects at least one of a stop sign in the forward field of view and a stoplight in the forward field of view, and wherein when said alert system detects a stoplight or stop sign in the forward field of view and determines that the equipped vehicle is not going to stop based on at least one of a current speed of the equipped vehicle and a deceleration of the equipped vehicle, said alert system generates an alert signal to indicate that the equipped vehicle is not going to stop at the detected stoplight or stop sign.

Abstract
An alert system for a vehicle includes a lane departure warning system for detecting lane markers on a road being traveled by the equipped vehicle and a side object detection system for detecting the presence of another vehicle in a side lane adjacent to the lane being traveled by the equipped vehicle. When the lane departure warning system detects the equipped vehicle making a lane change into a side lane and when the side object detection system detects a vehicle in that side lane, the alert system may generate an alert to the driver of the equipped vehicle. The alert system may detect a stoplight or stop sign in the forward field of view of a forward facing camera and may generate an alert if the system determines that the equipped vehicle is not going to stop at the stoplight or stop sign.

a lane departure warning system operable to detect lane markers on a road being traveled by a vehicle equipped with said alert system, wherein said lane departure warning system comprises an image sensor that detects lane markers on the road being traveled by the equipped vehicle; a side object detection system operable to detect the presence of another vehicle in a side lane adjacent to the lane being traveled by the equipped vehicle, wherein said side object detection system comprises a sensor comprising at least one of an image sensor and a radar sensor, said sensor detecting the presence of the overtaking vehicle in the adjacent side lane; wherein when said lane departure warning system detects the equipped vehicle making a lane change into a side lane and when said side object detection system detects a vehicle in that side lane, said alert system generates an alert to the driver of the equipped vehicle, and wherein said alert system generates said alert to the driver of the equipped vehicle irrespective of the status of a turn signal of the equipped vehicle; and a forward facing camera having a forward field of view in the forward direction of travel of the equipped vehicle, said forward facing camera capturing image data within the forward field of view, and wherein said alert system processes said captured image data and detects at least one of a stop sign in the forward field of view and a stoplight in the forward field of view, and wherein when said alert system detects a stoplight or stop sign in the forward field of view and determines that the equipped vehicle is not going to stop based on at least one of a current speed of the equipped vehicle and a deceleration of the equipped vehicle, said alert system generates an alert signal to indicate that the equipped vehicle is not going to stop at the detected stoplight or stop sign. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12)

a forward facing camera having a forward field of view in the forward direction of travel of the vehicle equipped with said alert system, said forward facing camera capturing image data within the forward field of view; a wireless communication system for wirelessly communicating to at least one receiver remote from the equipped vehicle; wherein said alert system processes said captured image data and detects at least one of a stop sign in the forward field of view and a stoplight in the forward field of view; and wherein when said alert system detects a stoplight or stop sign in the forward field of view and determines that the equipped vehicle is not going to stop based on at least one of a current speed of the equipped vehicle and a deceleration of the equipped vehicle, said alert system communicates an alert via said wireless communication system to alert drivers of other vehicles that the equipped vehicle is not going to stop at the detected stoplight or stop sign. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)
