Abstract

An improved optical fiber achieves both reduced bending and microbending losses, as well as a much higher Brillouin threshold, as compared to standard transmission fibers. The optical fiber comprises a core including at least two dopants and having a refractive index difference Δn₁ with an outer optical cladding, a first inner cladding having a refractive index difference Δn₂ with the outer cladding, and a depressed, second inner cladding having a refractive index difference Δn₃ with the outer cladding of less than −3×10⁻³. The radial concentration of at least one of the core dopants varies continuously over the entire core region of the optical fiber.

Claims

1. An optical fiber, comprising:

a central core surrounded by an outer optical cladding, said central core (i) including at least two core dopants, wherein the radial concentration of at least one of said core dopants varies substantially continuously over said central core, and (ii) having a radius r₁ that is between about 3.5 microns and 4.5 microns and a positive refractive index difference Δ

n₁ with said outer optical cladding of between about 4.2×

3</sup>;

a first inner cladding positioned between said central core and said outer optical cladding, said first inner cladding having a radius r₂ that is between about 7.5 microns and 14.5 microns and a refractive index difference Δ

3</sup>; and

2. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the radial concentration of each of said at least two core dopants varies substantially continuously over said central core.

3. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the optical fiber has, at a wavelength of 1550 nanometers, a spontaneous Brillouin spectrum width of at least about 100 MHz.

4. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein said at least two core dopants include one or more of germanium (Ge), fluorine (F), phosphorus (P), aluminum (Al), chlorine (Cl), boron (B), nitrogen (N), and/or alkali metals.

An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein a first said core dopant comprises germanium (Ge), the germanium concentration within said central core varying radially between about 1 and 20 weight percent, and a second said core dopant comprises fluorine (F), the fluorine concentration within said central core varying radially between about 0.1 and 10 weight percent.

An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1625 nanometers, bending losses that (i) are less than about 0.1 dB/m for a winding of ten turns around a bend radius of 15 millimeters, and (ii) are less than about 0.5 dB/m for a winding of one turn around a bend radius of 7.5 millimeters.

An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1550 nanometers, bending losses that (i) are less than about 0.02 dB/m for a winding of ten turns around a bend radius of 15 millimeters, and (ii) less than about 0.05 dB/m for a winding of one turn around a bend radius of 10 millimeters.

8. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1310 nanometers, a chromatic dispersion slope less than or equal to about 0.092 ps/(nm²·

km).

9. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having a cancellation of chromatic dispersion at a wavelength of between about 1300 and 1324 nanometers.

10. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having a cabled cut-off wavelength of less than or equal to about 1260 nanometers.

11. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1550 nanometers, an effective area greater than or equal to about 50 μ

m².

12. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1550 nanometers, an effective area of about 80 μ

m².

13. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1550 nanometers, attenuation of less than or equal to about 0.3 dB/km.

14. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the radial variation of at least one core dopant concentration is such that its first derivative is proportional to the radial power fraction P(r) of an optical signal transmitted in the optical fiber.

15. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein one of said core dopants comprises germanium (Ge), the germanium concentration within said core varying radially between about 1 and 20 weight percent.

16. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein one of said core dopants comprises flourine (F), the flourine concentration within said core varying radially between about 0.3 and 8 weight percent.

17. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein one of said core dopants comprises phosphorus (P), the phosphorus concentration within said core varying radially between about 1 and 10 weight percent.

18. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein said depressed, second inner cladding comprises germanium in a concentration between about 0.5 and 7 weight percent.

19. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of up to 1625 nanometers, microbending losses of about 0.8 dB/km or less as measured by the fixed diameter drum method.

20. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein r₁/r₂, the ratio of the radius of said core to the radius of said first inner cladding layer, is between about 0.27 and 0.5.

21. An optical fiber according to claim 1, wherein the value of the following integral I₁ is between about 17×

22. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1625 nanometers, bending losses that are less than about 0.2 dB/m for a winding of one turn around a bend radius of 10 millimeters.

23. An optical fiber according to claim 1, the optical fiber having, at a wavelength of 1550 nanometers, bending losses that are less than about 0.2 dB/m for a winding of one turn around a bend radius of 7.5 millimeters.

24. A cable containing one or more optical fibers according to claim 1.

25. A high bit-rate long-haul optical transmission cable containing one or more optical fibers according to claim 1.

26. A Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) optical system comprising one or more optical fibers according to claim 1.

27. A Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) optical system according to claim 26 further comprising an optical module in communication with said one or more optical fibers.

28. A Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) optical system according to claim 26 further comprising a storage box for receiving said one or more optical fibers.

29. A Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) optical system comprising one or more optical fibers according to claim 1.

30. A Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) optical system according to claim 29 further comprising an optical module in communication with said one or more optical fibers.

31. A Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC) optical system according to claim 29 further comprising a storage box for receiving said one or more optical fibers.

32. A telecommunication system comprising one or more optical fibers according to claim 1, the telecommunication system further comprising an optical module in communication with said one or more optical fibers.
