Abstract

The invention is a modular cable termination plug having a conductor divider having an entrant barb and a plurality of divider channels, a load bar having a plurality of through holes and a plurality of slots, and a plurality of contact terminals. Additionally, the invention may include a housing, a strain relief collar and a strain relief boot.

Claims

1. A method of terminating a cable having a plurality of twisted signal pairs of conductors and an internal spline with a connector, said method comprising:

providing a conductor divider having a plurality of divider channels for separating and arranging signal pairs of conductors of said cable in fixed planes and a double post entrant barb;

inserting said double post entrant barb into said cable such that each post of the double post entrant barb fits into a corner of said internal spline flush to the end of said cable;

untwisting said twisted signal pairs of conductors of said cable;

placing each untwisted signal pair into one of said divider channels such that individual conductors of said twisted pairs emerge from said conductor divider opposite said cable;

providing a load bar having through holes adapted to separate said individual conductors and arrange said individual conductors into a plurality of fixed planes;

inserting said conductors of said twisted pairs into said through holes of said load bar, thereby forming a termination subassembly comprising said conductors, said conductor divider, and said load bar;

inserting said termination subassembly into a cavity of a connector housing; and

electrically terminating said individual conductors in said connector housing.

The method of claim 1 wherein said connector housing and said load bar are provided with slots aligned with said individual conductors, and further wherein electrically terminating said individual conductors in said connector housing comprises inserting a plurality of insulation piercing contacts through said slots of said connector housing and said load bar.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising installing said load bar adjacent to said conductor divider.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising trimming the ends of said conductors after insertion of the conductors into said through holes of said load bar.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising placing a strain relief collar around said cable before placing said signal pairs into said divider channels.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising inserting portions of walls of said strain relief collar into said cavity of said connector housing after forming said termination subassembly, thereby retaining said termination subassembly within said connector housing.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising engaging a latch tab of said strain relief collar with a pocket edge of said connector housing.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein, following insertion of said portions of said walls of said strain relief collar into said connector housing, said strain relief collar exerts a force against said conductor divider, thereby ensuring proper positioning of said conductor divider and said load bar within said housing.

9. The method of claim 5 further comprising placing a strain relief boot around said cable before placing said strain relief collar around said cable.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising installing said strain relief boot on said connector by latching said strain relief boot to said strain relief collar.
