1. A method for delivering and retrieving an expandable filter to a desired location in a vessel comprising:
- providing an introduction catheter having proximal and distal ends and a lumen;
providing a retrieval catheter having proximal and distal ends and a lumen;
introducing a first guidewire into the vessel;
advancing the introduction catheter through the vessel over the first guidewire with the first guidewire received in the lumen of the introduction catheter;
providing a second guidewire having proximal and distal ends, a distal region, and an expandable filter carried on the distal region;
introducing the second guidewire and expandable filter into the lumen of the introduction catheter;
advancing the second guidewire and expandable filter through the vessel in the lumen of the introduction catheter;
expanding the filter at the desired location within the lumen of the vessel;
removing the introduction catheter from the vessel;
after the introduction catheter has been removed introducing a distal end of the retrieval catheter into the vessel;
advancing the retrieval catheter through the vessel over the second guidewire to retrieve the filter; and
removing the retrieval catheter, second guidewire and filter from the vessel.

5. A method for filtering emboli from blood flowing through a body vessel during therapeutic treatment at a treatment site in the vessel comprising:
-
introducing a first guidewire into the vessel; advancing a first catheter over the first guidewire with the first guidewire received in a lumen of the first catheter; removing the first guidewire from the vessel; advancing a filter carried on a distal portion of a second guidewire through the lumen of the first catheter to a location in the vessel distal to the treatment site, the filter being expandable from a collapsed configuration when contained in the lumen of the first catheter to an expanded configuration when deployed in the lumen of the vessel; expanding the filter within the lumen of the vessel at a location downstream of the treatment site; performing a therapeutic treatment at the treatment site; filtering emboli released into blood during the therapeutic treatment with the filter; removing the first catheter from the vessel; after the first catheter has been removed introducing a distal end of a retrieval catheter into the vessel over the second guidewire with the second guidewire received in a lumen of the retrieval catheter; advancing the retrieval catheter through the vessel to retrieve the filter; and removing the retrieval catheter and second guidewire and filter from the vessel. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7)
