Abstract

An antenna coupled to a wireless communication device that is comprised of a series of conductive elements that form a conductor when placed under a force. The conductor is coupled to a wireless communication device to provide an antenna so that the wireless communication device is capable of communicating at an operating frequency defined by the length and construction of the conductor. The wireless communication device, through its communication using the conductor as an antenna, acts as an indicator of force to an interrogation reader when the wireless communication device is capable of communicating to the interrogation reader using the conductor as an antenna.

Claims

1. A device for wirelessly communicating information, comprising:

a wireless communication component;

a series of conductive elements joined by one or more conductive links that couple the conductive elements together to form an antenna operable to resonate at a first frequency when the series of conductive elements is subjected to at least a threshold force, wherein the series of conductive elements do not join together and do not form an antenna when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force; and

a support element coupled to both the series of conductive elements and the wireless communication component.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the support element is coupled to the series of conductive elements via a first conductive element in the series of conductive elements.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the support element coupled to the wireless communication component is configured to operate at a second frequency when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the support element is further configured to resonate at an operating frequency of around 2.45 GHz, and wherein the series of conductive elements resonates at an operating frequency of around 915 MHz when subjected to at least the threshold force.

5. The device of claim 3, wherein the support element is an antenna configured to resonate at the second operating frequency until at least the threshold force is applied to the series of conductive elements.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the support element comprises a tuning ring.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises two separate series of conductive elements, and wherein each separate series of conductive elements is coupled to the support element.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises a linked chain that couples together when subjected to at least the threshold force.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises a series of hollow conductive spheres that couple together by the conductive links when subjected to at least the threshold force.

10. A wireless communication system for wirelessly communicating information, comprising:

an interrogation reader; and

a wireless communication device configured to communicate with the interrogation reader, wherein the wireless communication device comprises;

a wireless communication component;

a series of conductive elements joined by one or more conductive links that couple the conductive elements together to form an antenna operable to resonate at a first frequency when the series of conductive elements is subjected to at least a threshold force, wherein the series of conductive elements do not join together and do not form an antenna when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force; and

a support element coupled to the series of conductive elements and the wireless communication component.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the support element is coupled to the series of conductive elements via a first conductive element in the series of conductive elements.

12. The device of claim 10, wherein the support element coupled to the wireless communication component is configured to operate at a second frequency when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the support element is further configured to resonate at an operating frequency of around 2.45 GHz, and wherein the series of conductive elements is configured to resonate at an operating frequency of around 915 MHz when subjected to at least the threshold force.

14. The device of claim 10, wherein the support element is an antenna configured to resonate at a second operating frequency until at least the threshold force is applied to the series of conductive elements.

15. The device of claim 10, wherein the support member comprises a tuning ring.

16. The device of claim 10, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises two separate series of conductive elements, and wherein each separate series of conductive elements is coupled to the support element.

17. The device of claim 10, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises a linked chain that couples together when subjected to at least the threshold force.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises a series of hollow conductive spheres that couple together by the conductive links when subjected to at least the threshold force.

19. A method, comprising:

coupling a series of conductive elements together using one or more conductive links to form an antenna operable to resonate at a first frequency when the series of conductive elements is subjected to at least a threshold force, wherein the series of conductive elements are not coupled together and do not form an antenna when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force; and

coupling a support element to the series of conductive elements and a wireless communication component.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the support element is coupled to the series of conductive elements via a first conductive element in the series of conductive elements.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to the threshold force, the wireless communication component is configured to operate at a second frequency via the support element.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the second frequency is around 2.45 GHz and the first frequency is around 915 MHz.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises two separate series of conductive elements, and wherein coupling the series of conductive elements to the support element comprises coupling each separate series of conductive elements to the support element.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises a linked chain that couples together when subjected to at least the threshold force.

25. The method of claim 19, wherein the series of conductive elements comprises a series of hollow conductive spheres that couple together by the conductive links when subjected to at least the threshold force.

26. A method of wirelessly communicating information, comprising:

providing a series of conductive elements joined by one or more conductive links that couple the conductive elements together when subjected to at least a threshold force, wherein the conductive elements, when coupled together, form a conductor that is configured to resonate at a first frequency, and wherein the series of conductive elements do not join together and do not resonate at the first frequency when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force; and

coupling a support element between a wireless communication device and the series of conductive elements, wherein the support element is configured to resonate at a second frequency when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the series of conductive elements are subjected to the threshold force by stretching the series of conductive elements.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the series of conductive elements are subjected to the threshold force by compressing the series of conductive elements.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein the series of conductive elements are subjected to the threshold force by rotating the series of conductive elements.

30. The method of claim 26, wherein the support element is a tuning ring, the method further comprising:

placing a force on the tuning ring to reduce strain on the wireless communication device caused by a force placed on the series of conductive elements; and

communicating the information at the second frequency using the tuning ring as the second antenna.

31. The method of claim 26, wherein the conductive elements, when coupled together under a first force, form a first conductor length configured to operate at the first frequency in a first mode of operation, and wherein the conductive elements, when coupled together under a second force, form a second conductor length configured to operate at a third frequency in a second mode of operation.

32. The method of claim 31, further comprising placing the first force on a first of the series of conductive elements, and placing the second force on a second of the series of conductive elements located adjacent to the first of the series of conductive elements.

33. The method of claim 26, further comprising locking the series of conductive elements into a conducting position when subjected to at least the threshold force.

34. The method of claim 26, wherein subjecting the series of conductive elements to at least the threshold force comprises causing an area of the series of conductive elements to expand in relation to temperature.

35. The method of claim 26, further comprising wirelessly communicating the information by reporting threshold force information from the wireless communication device to a reporting system.

36. The method of claim 26, further comprising:

communicating the information at the first frequency using the series of conductive elements as a first antenna when and only when the series of conductive elements is subjected to at least the threshold force; and

communicating the information at the second frequency using the support element as a second antenna when the series of conductive elements is not subjected to at least the threshold force.

37. The method of claim 26, wherein subjecting the series of conductive elements to at least the threshold force comprises causing an area of the series of conductive elements to contract in relation to temperature.
