Abstract

In one implementation, a failsafe method for implantable satellite pacemaker pacing is provided, which includes pacing with a satellite pacemaker and monitoring for a local pacing pulse with an other satellite pacemaker. This implementation further includes, pacing with a surrogate satellite pacemaker if the local pacing pulse is not detected by the other satellite pacemaker. Certain implementations may include transmitting a wireless signal from the other satellite pacemaker to a master pacemaker if the local pacing pulse is not detected by the other satellite pacemaker and using the master pacemaker to select the surrogate satellite pacemaker. Certain implementations may include monitoring for the local pacing pulse with a plurality of satellite and causing the plurality of satellite pacemakers to select the surrogate satellite pacemaker.

Claims

1. An implantable failsafe pacemaker system comprising:

a. a plurality of satellite pacemakers adapted to be mounted to an exterior of a heart;

b. each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers being capable of sensing and delivering pacing pluses to the heart via at least one electrode; and

c. each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers comprising control circuitry configured to wait a unique delay period beyond an escape interval and to begin pacing if no local pacing pulse from another one of the plurality of satellite pacemakers is detected during the escape interval or the delay period.

2. The failsafe pacemaker system of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers comprise a wireless transceiver and is configured so that when one satellite pacemaker of the plurality of satellite pacemakers assumes pacing, the one satellite pacemaker transmits a wireless communication to others of the plurality of satellite pacemakers comprising information based on an anticipated longevity of the one satellite pacemaker.

3. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 2 wherein each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers are adapted to enter a low power state in response to the wireless communication by the one satellite pacemaker.

4. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 3 wherein each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers further comprise a random number generator to provide the unique delay period.

5. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 3 wherein each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers further comprise a preprogrammed unique delay period.

6. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers further comprise a random number generator capable of providing the unique delay period.

7. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers further comprise a preprogrammed unique delay period.

8. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 1 further comprising a pacemaker comprising a lead adapted for implantation within a right side of a heart.

9. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 8 wherein the plurality of satellite pacemakers are adapted for being attached to a left side of the heart.

10. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 1 wherein the at least one electrode is adapted to secure a satellite pacemaker to the heart.

11. An implantable failsafe pacemaker system comprising:

a. a plurality of satellite pacemakers each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers being capable of sensing and delivering pacing pluses via at least one electrode mounted at an exterior of a heart;

b. each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers being adapted for wireless communication between each other of the plurality of satellite pacemakers; and

c. each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers including a processor comprising programmed executable instructions, the programmed executable instructions comprising;

i) monitoring an escape interval after a last local pacing pulse for a next local pacing pulse;

ii) waiting a delay period beyond the escape interval specific for each satellite pacemaker; and

iii) providing surrogate pacing pulses after waiting the delay period if no pacing pulse is detected from another one of the plurality of satellite pacemakers within the escape interval and within the delay period.

The implantable pacemaker system of claim 11 wherein the executable instructions further comprise providing a wireless communication to others of the plurality of satellite pacemakers, the wireless communication comprising information based on an anticipated longevity associated with providing the surrogate pacing pulses.

13. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 12 wherein providing the wireless communication comprises providing the anticipated longevity.

14. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 12 wherein providing the wireless communication comprises providing a hibernation instruction to the others of the plurality of satellite pacemakers.

15. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 14 wherein providing the wireless communication further comprises providing a hibernation duration to the others of the plurality of satellite pacemakers.

16. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 14 wherein the executable instructions further comprises determining a hibernation duration in response to the wireless communication.

17. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 11 wherein the executable instructions further comprises instructing others of the plurality of satellite pacemakers to hibernate in combination with providing the surrogate pacing pulses.

18. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 17 wherein the executable instructions further comprise providing a hibernation duration instruction to the others of the satellite pacemakers.

19. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 17 wherein the executable instructions further comprise providing anticipated longevity information to the others of the satellite pacemakers.

20. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 11 wherein the executable instructions further comprise generating a random number within a range for use in determining the delay period.

21. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 11 wherein each satellite pacemaker comprises a preprogrammed unique delay period.

22. The implantable pacemaker system of claim 11 wherein each of the plurality of satellite pacemakers comprises an electrode capable of being inserted into the exterior wall of the heart.
