1. A computer program product comprising one or more computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions for implementing a method for a computing system displaying information from one or more linked web pages and without requiring user commitment to download the one or more linked web pages, and wherein the method comprises:
- accessing and displaying a current web page that includes a displayed and selectable link to a corresponding linked web page;
accessing summary information associated with the corresponding linked web page and for display with the current web page in response to a cursor hovering over the displayed link, wherein accessing the summary information comprises accessing a store of extracted summary data, the extracted summary data having been extracted from the linked web page by;
identifying a plurality of paragraph headers on the linked web page; and
storing the plurality of paragraph headers as extracted summary data;
receiving user input that causes the cursor to hover over the displayed link; and
in response to receiving the user input that causes the cursor to hover over the displayed link, displaying the summary information within an informational region that is displayed simultaneously with the display of the current web page, the summary data including up to a predefined maximum number of paragraph headers from the extracted summary data.

Abstract
What is disclosed is acquiring information regarding a web page, without having to commit to downloading that page. In one embodiment, after a current web page is downloaded from one source, and information regarding web pages linked to by links in the current web page are downloaded from a second source, when a user hovers a cursor over a link on a current web page, an informational region is displayed by the link that includes the information from the second source. The informational region may include, for example, a text box that apparently floats by the link. The information in the region can include, for example, keywords in the meta tags of the web page; paragraph headings of the web page; links on the web page to other pages; etc.

3. A method, performed by a computing system, for displaying information from one or more linked web pages and without requiring user commitment to downloading the one or more linked web pages, the method comprising:

accessing and displaying a current web page that includes a displayed and selectable link to a corresponding linked web page; determining the displayed link is referenced within a stored link list that is accessible to the computing system, wherein the stored link list includes, for each link referenced within the link list, a web page address and summary information corresponding to a web page associated with each link, respectively; accessing the summary information associated with the corresponding linked web page, wherein the summary information is configured to be displayed in response to a cursor hovering over the displayed link; receiving user input that causes the cursor to hover over the displayed link; and in response to receiving the user input that causes the cursor to hover over the displayed link, displaying the summary information within an informational region that is displayed simultaneously with the display of the current web page, wherein the displayed summary information includes paragraph headings extracted from the linked reference corresponding to the displayed link and prior to receipt of the user input causing the cursor to hover over the displayed link, and which paragraph headings are stored in the summary information for the displayed link, wherein displaying the summary information includes displaying up to a predefined maximum number of paragraph headings from the summary data. - View Dependent Claims (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

A computing system comprising memory and computer-executable instructions stored thereon for implementing a method in which the computing system displays information from one or more linked web pages and without requiring user commitment to download the one or more linked web pages, and wherein the method comprises:

accessing and displaying a current web page that includes a displayed and selectable link to a corresponding linked web page; storing a link list that includes, for each link referenced within the link list, a web page address and web page summary information corresponding to a web page associated with each link, respectively; determining the displayed link is referenced within the stored link list; accessing the summary information associated with the corresponding linked web page and for display with the current web page in response to a cursor hovering over the displayed link, wherein accessing the summary information comprises accessing a store of extracted summary data, the extracted summary data having been extracted from the linked web page by; identifying a plurality of paragraph headers on the linked web page; and storing the plurality of paragraph headers as extracted summary data; after storing the plurality of paragraph headers as extracted summary data, receiving user input that causes the cursor to hover over the displayed link; and in response to receiving the user input that causes the cursor to hover over the displayed link, displaying the summary information within an informational region that is displayed simultaneously with the display of the current web page, the summary data including up to a predefined maximum number of paragraph headers from the extracted summary data. - View Dependent Claims (20)
