Abstract

The present invention improves the aperture ratio of a pixel of a reflection-type display device or a reflection type display device without increasing the number of masks and without using a blackmask. A pixel electrode (167) is arranged so as to partially overlap a source wiring (137) for shielding the gap between pixels from light, and a thin film transistor is arranged so as to partially overlap a gate wiring (166) for shielding a channel region of the thin film transistor from light, thereby realizing a high pixel aperture ratio.

Claims

1. A display device comprising:

a pixel portion and a driver circuit portion, wherein each of the pixel portion and the driver circuit portion comprises;

a semiconductor layer and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a conductive layer formed on a same surface as the gate electrode, and extending in a direction perpendicular to a gate wiring, wherein a part of a pixel electrode overlaps the conductive layer;

an insulating film formed over at least the gate electrode; and

an electrode formed over the insulating film, and electrically connected to the semiconductor layer;

an external input terminal portion, wherein the external input terminal portion comprises;

a first wiring formed on the same surface as the gate electrode;

a second wiring formed on a same surface as the electrode, and electrically connected to the first wiring through a contact hole opened in the insulating film;

a transparent conductive film formed over the second wiring, and electrically connected to the second wiring; and

a flexible printed circuit provided over the transparent conductive film, and electrically connected to the transparent conductive film.

2. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the gate wiring is formed on the same surface as the electrode.

3. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the flexible printed circuit contains a base film and a wiring.

4. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the insulating film contains a resin material.

5. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the gate electrode is formed over the semiconductor layer.

6. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a personal computer, a video camera, a portable information terminal, a digital camera, a digital video disk player, a portable telephone, an electronic book, a projector, a head mounted type display, and an electric game appliance.

7. A display device according to claim 1, wherein the electrode comprises a first titanium film, an aluminum film over the first titanium film and a second titanium film over the aluminum film.

8. A display device according to claim 1, further comprising a base film formed on a substrate.

9. A display device comprising:

a pixel portion and a driver circuit portion, wherein each of the pixel portion and the driver circuit portion comprises;

a semiconductor layer and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a conductive layer formed on a same surface as the gate electrode, and extending in a direction perpendicular to a gate wiring, wherein a part of a pixel electrode overlaps the conductive layer;

an insulating film formed over at least the gate electrode; and

an electrode formed over the insulating film, and electrically connected to the semiconductor layer;

a pixel electrode electrically connected to the electrode;

an external input terminal portion, wherein the external input terminal portion comprises;

a first wiring formed on the same surface as the gate electrode;

a second wiring formed on a same surface as the electrode, and electrically connected to the first wiring through a contact hole opened in the insulating film;

a transparent conductive film formed on a same surface as the pixel electrode, and electrically connected to the second wiring; and

a flexible printed circuit provided over the transparent conductive film, and electrically connected to the transparent conductive film.

10. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the gate wiring is formed on the same surface as the electrode.

11. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the flexible printed circuit contains a base film and a wiring.

12. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the transparent conductive film contains at least one selected from the group consisting of indium oxide, an alloy of indium oxide and tin oxide, and an alloy of indium oxide and zinc oxide.

13. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the insulating film contains a resin material.

14. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the gate electrode is formed over the semiconductor layer.

15. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a personal computer, a video camera, a portable information terminal, a digital camera, a digital video disk player, a portable telephone, an electronic book, a projector, a head mounted type display, and an electric game appliance.

16. A display device according to claim 9, wherein the electrode comprises a first titanium film, an aluminum film over the first titanium film and a second titanium film over the aluminum film.

17. A display device according to claim 9, further comprising a base film formed on a substrate.

18. A display device comprising:

a pixel portion and a driver circuit portion, wherein each of the pixel portion and the driver circuit portion comprises;

a semiconductor layer and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a conductive layer formed on a same surface as the gate electrode, and extending in a direction perpendicular to a gate wiring, wherein a part of a pixel electrode overlaps the conductive layer;

an insulating film formed over at least the gate electrode; and

an electrode formed over the insulating film, and electrically connected to the semiconductor layer;

an external input terminal portion, wherein the external input terminal portion comprises;

a first wiring formed on the same surface as the gate electrode;

a second wiring formed on a same surface as the electrode, and electrically connected to the first wiring through a contact hole opened in the insulating film;

a transparent conductive film formed over the second wiring, and electrically connected to the second wiring; and

a flexible printed circuit provided over the transparent conductive film, and electrically connected to the transparent conductive film through a conductive particle.

19. A display device according to claim 18, wherein the gate wiring is formed on the same surface as the electrode.

20. A display device according to claim 18, wherein the flexible printed circuit contains a base film and a wiring.

21. A display device according to claim 18, wherein the insulating film contains a resin material.

22. A display device according to claim 18, wherein the gate electrode is formed over the semiconductor layer.

23. A display device according to claim 18, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a personal computer, a video camera, a portable information terminal, a digital camera, a digital video disk player, a portable telephone, an electronic book, a projector, a head mounted type display, and an electric game appliance.

24. A display device according to claim 18, wherein the electrode comprises a first titanium film, an aluminum film over the first titanium film and a second titanium film over the aluminum film.

25. A display device according to claim 18, further comprising a base film formed on a substrate.

26. A display device comprising:

a pixel portion and a driver circuit portion, wherein each of the pixel portion and the driver circuit portion comprises;

a semiconductor layer and a gate electrode with a gate insulating film interposed therebetween;

a conductive layer formed on a same surface as the gate electrode, and extending in a direction perpendicular to a gate wiring, wherein a part of a pixel electrode overlaps the conductive layer;

an insulating film formed over at least the gate electrode; and

an electrode formed over the insulating film, and electrically connected to the semiconductor layer;

a pixel electrode electrically connected to the electrode;

an external input terminal portion, wherein the external input terminal portion comprises;

a first wiring formed on the same surface as the gate electrode;

a second wiring formed on a same surface as the electrode, and electrically connected to the first wiring through a contact hole opened in the insulating film;

a transparent conductive film formed on a same surface as the pixel electrode, and electrically connected to the second wiring; and

a flexible printed circuit provided over the transparent conductive film, and electrically connected to the transparent conductive film through a conductive particle.

27. A display device according to claim 26, wherein the gate wiring is formed on the same surface as the electrode.

28. A display device according to claim 26, wherein the flexible printed circuit contains a base film and a wiring.

29. A display device according to claim 26, wherein the transparent conductive film contains at least one selected from the group consisting of indium oxide, an alloy of indium oxide and tin oxide, and an alloy of indium oxide and zinc oxide.

30. A display device according to claim 26, wherein the insulating film contains a resin material.

31. A display device according to claim 26, wherein the gate electrode is formed over the semiconductor layer.

32. A display device according to claim 26, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a personal computer, a video camera, a portable information terminal, a digital camera, a digital video disk player, a portable telephone, an electronic book, a projector, a head mounted type display, and an electric game appliance.

33. A display device according to claim 26, wherein the electrode comprises a first titanium film, an aluminum film over the first titanium film and a second titanium film over the aluminum film.

34. A display device according to claim 26, further comprising a base film formed on a substrate.
