Lancet
First Claim
1. A medical skin piercing device, comprising:
- a barrel;
a lancet holder for holding a lancet in a forward part of the barrel to allow a tip of a lancet to advance from a retracted position to a projecting position, the lancet holder being moveable between a first forward position and a first rearward position;
bias means configured to bias the lancet holder rearwardly;
a hammer moveable between a second rearward position and a second forward position, and operable to engage said lancet holder in momentum transfer relationship;
a barrier to the rear of the hammer, configured to be axially adjusted by a user within the barrel by cam action as a result of rotation;
a spring acting between the barrier and the hammer, the spring being compressed to a degree determined by an axial adjustment of the barrier within the barrel; and
a trigger mechanism for holding the hammer in said second rearward position, and releasing the hammer from said second rearward position,wherein, upon release of the hammer, the hammer is propelled by said spring to impact upon said lancet holder, a propelling force being dependent on a user-set degree of compression of the spring.

Abstract
A skin pricker has a barrel (1,11) in which a hammer (2,29) released by a trigger mechanism (32,34) can be shot forwards by a compressed spring (3,38) to impact on a lancet (24) and momentarily project its tip. The rear end of the spring acts against a barrier (4,39) adjustable axially of the barrel, so that the spring can be more or less compressed before release, causing the hammer to act with greater or lesser force on the lancet. The barrier (4,39) may have projections (6,8,42) that engage in skew slots (7,9,43) in the barrel, so that rotation of the barrier axially adjusts it. A sleeve (44) over the rear part of the barrel instrumental in priming the device may co-operate with the projections and be rotatable to set the desired spring force.

12. A medical skin piercing device, comprising:
-
a barrel having a forward, a rearward end, and a slot in a rearward portion of the barrel; a lancet holder provided within the barrel and moveable between a first forward position and a first rearward position, the lancet holder configured to hold a lancet in a forward part of the barrel; a biasing spring configured to bias the lancet holder toward the rearward end of the barrel; a hammer provided within the barrel and moveable between a second rearward position and a second forward position; a force adjustor provided within the barrel to the rear of the hammer, comprising a barrier and a stud on a periphery of said barrier, the stud configured to engage with the slot of the rearward portion of the barrel; a firing spring between the barrier and the hammer, a spacing between the barrier and the hammer and a corresponding compression of the spring determined by a cam action between the slot and the stud of the force adjustor to position the force adjustor axially within the barrel and against an end of the firing spring; and a trigger mechanism configured to hold the hammer in said second rearward position in a first mode, and to release the hammer from the second rearward position in a second mode, wherein, upon release of the hammer, the firing spring propels the hammer to impact upon a rearward end of said lancet holder and propel said lancet holder from the first rearward position to the first forward position, a propelling force of said firing spring dependent upon the compression of the spring prior to the release.
