An optical disk storing digital image information recorded thereon, the digital image information comprising an image information block including I-picture data for intra-frame coded pictures, P-picture data for predictive coded pictures, and B-picture data for bi-directionally predictive coded pictures, said disk comprising:
- a track having the image information blocks recorded thereon;
wherein the image information block includes a data region preceding the picture data, said data region containing information representing the positional ordering arrangement of I-, P-, and B-pictures in the image information block and the total quantity of picture units in the image information block,wherein a reproducing apparatus accesses said data region during playback operation and uses information from said data region for reproducing said digital image information.

Abstract
In an optical disk storing digital image information in the form of a succession of blocks, each comprising a plurality of frames comprising I-, P- and B-pictures, wherein an address format is preformatted in front of the block of image information of said plurality of frames, and the data arrangement within each image information blocks is such that I- and P-pictures are collectively disposed. The position of the I-pictures within each block is shifted from one block to another. The I-picture data may be divided into fraction according to the position on the screen, the DCT frequency, or layering, and the fractional I-picture data may be arranged in the image information blocks, and a header or parity signal is recorded in front of each fractional I-picture data. With such a configuration, it is possible to increase the speed of fast playback, and realize smooth playback picture.

a motor for rotating said disk; an optical head for emitting light onto said disk and receiving light reflected from said disk to reproduce the information recorded thereon; wherein said apparatus, during playback, reads the first information and the second information recorded on the data region corresponding to an image information block, reads at least I-picture data of the digital information in the corresponding image information block based on said first information and said second information.

A method for playing back video information from an optical disk, said optical disk having digital image information recorded thereon, the digital image information comprising an image information block including I-picture data for intra-frame coded pictures, P-picture data for predictive coded pictures, and B-picture data for bi-directionally predictive coded pictures, the image information block including a data region preceding the picture data, said data region containing information representing the positional ordering arrangement of I-, P-, and B-pictures in the image information block and the total quantity of picture units included in the image information block, said method comprising:

reading the first information and the second information recorded on the data region corresponding to an image information block; and reading at least I-picture data of the digital information in the corresponding image information block based on said first information and said second information.

An apparatus for recording, on an optical disk, digital image information comprising an image information block including I-picture data for intra-frame coded pictures, P-picture data for predictive coded pictures, and B-picture data for bi-directionally predictive coded pictures, the image information block including a data region preceding the picture data, said data region containing information representing the positional ordering arrangement of I-, P-, and B-pictures in the image information block and the total quantity of picture units in the image information block, said apparatus comprising:
unit for disposing the data region of a corresponding image information block, preceding the picture data in the image information block.

A method for recording, on an optical disk, digital image information comprising an image information block including I-picture data for intra-frame coded pictures, P-picture data for predictive coded pictures, and B-picture data for bi-directionally predictive coded pictures, the image information block including a data region preceding the picture data, said data region containing information representing the positional ordering arrangement of I-, P-, and B-pictures in the image information block and the total quantity of picture units in the image information block, said method comprising:
disposing the data region of a corresponding image information block, preceding the picture data in the image information block.
